PG: Lemuel Coltrane notched his second hit in the bottom of the 8th inning driving in Andrew Thomas for the game-ending run. Lemuel Coltrane (2 rbi), Joe Coltrane (2 rbi) and Josh Ward (2 rbi) had 2 hits each. Thomas also earned the win on the mound giving up 1 walk in three innings pitched.

UCA: Walker Wilkins had 2 hits. Single hits by Grat Dalton, Ben Medinger (double), Jake Hunter and Carter Brown. Medinger, Jose Ramirez and Brett Smith shared pitching duties with Ramirez giving up 3 runs (1 er) and taking the loss.

WHS: Parker Kines gave up 1 hit with 12 strikeouts in the 5-inning win. Jake Parks went 3-for-3 with a double and 3 rbi. Clay Hill (double, rbi) and Mason Rich had 2 hits each. Kines also recorded a double.

Randleman 13, Asheboro 2

RHS: Two hits each for Hunter Atkins (4 rbi and a 3-run HR), Riley Edwards (4 rbi), Chesney Welch (2 rbi) and John Kirkpatrick (2 runs). Seth Way struck out 9 in 4 innings and got the win.

AHS: Connor Adams, Josh Meadows (double, rbi) and Cohen Caviness (HR) had hits. Davis Gore took the loss.

From WHS: Wheatmore women's soccer started their season off with a 6-0 win over Ledford.

Scoring for the warriors was Natalie Bowman (one assist), Ellie Garrison with 4 goals and Summer Bowman with one goal and 2 assists. Lucy Lockwood got the win in goal. Total shots for Wheatmore was 26.

From AHS: The Blue Comet Women's Soccer team notched a 1-1 tie in their first regular season game against Randleman.  The lone goal was scored by Natalie Flores.  AHS out-shot Randleman 21- 4 but struggled to find the back of the net.  Carlisle Dozier had 4 saves in goal for the Blue Comets.

February 27, 2023 – MID-PIEDMONT CONFERENCE AWARDS

The Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference has announced All-Conference Teams for the winter sports season along with Player and Coach of the Year honors.

Sixteen student-athletes from Asheboro High School were selected as All-Conference with special recognition give to Diego Gutierrez (Wrestler of the Year), Jerquarius Stanback (Player of the Year – men's basketball) and Tanner Marsh (Defensive Player of the Year – men's basketball).

Coach of the Year honors were awarded to Brian Nance in men's basketball and Jake Berrier in wrestling.

WRESTLINGINDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS (at Greensboro Coliseum)

**UPDATE** with congratulations to three Randolph County wrestlers on winning State Championships: Jose Flores from Southwestern Randolph in the 220 pound class and two Uwharrie Charter Eagles - Aldo Hernandez (his 3rd state title) at 138 pounds and Lorenzo Alston in the 145 pound class.

Eleven Randolph County wrestlers have 'Placed' in the consolation finals of this year's Individual wrestling tournament with seven more in championship matches this evening.

The State Championship matches will begin following the 4:00 Parade of Champions and pre-match festivities. The eighteen wrestlers who made it to the final rounds is the most for Randolph County wrestling in recent years, if not the most ever to place in the finals.

So far, Five 3rd Place, four 4th Place, one 5th Place and one 6th Place finish have been earned by local athletes.

WRESTLINGINDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY 2 (at Greensboro Coliseum)

Seven Randolph County athletes will wrestle for State Championships Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum. Five of those are from Dual Team Champion Uwharrie Charter Academy: Ethan Hines, Aldo Hernandez, Lorenzo Alston, Grayson Roberts and Jaden Maness. Spencer May from Trinity and Jose Flores from Southwestern Randolph are also in title matches.

Six local wrestlers have advanced to the consolation finals - the NCHSAA recognizes the top six wrestlers in 2A, 3A and 4A and the top four wrestlers in 1A.

Twelve others are still alive in the tournament but need at least one more win to reach the consolation finals.

February 14, 2023 – ASHEBORO VOLLEYBALL

Athletic Director Wes Berrier has announced the new head volleyball coach at Asheboro High School is Kelly Smith who will take over the Blue Comets program following coaching time at Eastern Randolph and Southern Guilford.

According to AD Berrier:

Coach Smith attended Eastern Randolph High School where she played 4 years of Varsity Volleyball and Basketball. Smith was a four-time All-Randolph County selection, a three-time Randolph County Player-of-the-Year, an All-State selection, and Mid-Piedmont Conference Player-of-the-Year her senior year.

She was also an Honorable Mention McDonald's All-American and a participant in both the North Carolina/South Carolina All-Star Game and the East/West All-Star Game while at Eastern Randolph High School.

Smith played college basketball at the University of West Virginia and East Carolina University.

After graduating at ECU, Smith moved back home and focused on Beach Volleyball and individual skill development. She took on the role of coaching Eastern Randolph Volleyball in 2017 before moving to Southern Guilford High School and coaching volleyball and basketball.

Smith is quoted saying that "her passion is coaching to make a difference on and off the court.” She expects her athletes to work hard in all facets of life. She encourages her athletes to try new things and to push themselves to be their best.

Coach Smith loves the people that she meets, the lives that she helps make a difference, and the career that she has. We are super excited to have Coach Kelly Smith as the new head volleyball coach of AHS!!

February 12, 2023 – WRESTLING REGIONALS

The Individual Wrestling Championships began Friday afternoon with 86 Randolph County athletes involved. That is the highest number of regional participants since 93 wrestlers qualified following the 2019-20 season.

Thirty-six of this year's participants qualified for the State Championship Tournament which begins Thursday at the Greensboro Coliseum.

February 11, 2023 – SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Swimming & Diving Championships began Thursday with the combined 1A/2A Championships at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.

The only Randolph County athlete to qualify this year was Sydney Hall of Wheatmore. The sophomore competed in the 50 meter freestyle and 100 meter butterfly races. She set a new personal best time in the 100 butterfly and placed 14th in the finals.

The 3A Championships took place Saturday with three individuals (in five events) and 2 relay teams qualifying for Asheboro. Freshman Megan Becker (women's 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle), sophomore Maci Columbia (women's 100 breaststroke and 500 freestyle) and junior Tyler Smith (men's 50 freestyle) were individual qualifiers with Columbia and Becker joined by seniors Madison Burnette and Fiona Wolfe-Roberts in the 200 meter and 400 meter freestyle relay races.

Megan Becker had the top finish in the group earning second place in 100 freestyle while the Mid-Piedmont Conference earned one championship with Ledford's Jenna Koh finishing first in the women's 100 meter breaststroke.

In the 100 freestyle event, Becker (2nd place), Koh (4th place) and Oak Grove's Cassidy Grubb (7th place) made up nearly half of the eight-swimmer field in the championship finals.

February 11, 2023 – INDOOR TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 36th Annual NCHSAA Indoor Track & Field Championships were held at the JDL Fast Track facility in Winston-Salem with the 3A title meets on Friday and championship meets for 1A/2A and 4A classifications held Saturday.

Three athletes from Asheboro qualified in 3A: juniors Lance Everhart and Valentino Mark along with senior Nicolas Chavez.

Saturday saw juniors Sarabeth Johnson from Trinity and Zach Hazelwood from Wheatmore in action along with Randleman senior Iniyah Mitchell.

Mitchell reached the podium with a third place finish in women's shot put.

Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary will host the 2023 championships with the 1A/2A meet on Thursday, 4A swimming on Friday and the 3A championships on Saturday.

February 4, 2023 - 3A REGIONAL SWIMMING RESULTS

From AHS:

Yesterday the Asheboro High School Swim Team competed in the NCHSAA 3A Central Regional Championships. Asheboro had the largest number of Regional qualifiers in the history of the program, adding to the number that made it last year.

In total, Asheboro High School had 20 total individual events and 6 relays entered to swim. There were great swims all-around with new Personal Best times, but the following are finishes that have advanced to the State Championships next weekend.

Megan Becker took home 2nd place in the Championship in the 200 Yard Freestyle (final time 1:57.67) and 2nd in the 100 Yard Freestyle (final time 53.87).

Tyler Smith finished 6th in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a personal best of 23.89.

Madison Burnette finished 10th in the 50 Yard Freestyle with 27.17.

Maci Columbia finished 6th in the 500 Yard Freestyle (final time 5:39.87) and 8th in the 100 Yard Breaststroke (final time 1:16.83).

The Women's 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, consisting of Fiona Wolfe-Roberts, Madison Burnette, Maci Columbia, and Megan Becker finished 3rd with a time of 4:03.35.

The Blue Comets will now advance to the NCHSAA 3A State Championship in Swimming this coming Saturday, February 11 at the Triangle Aquatic Center.

   Uwharrie Charter def. Avery County 39-36 for the 1A Championship

The Eagles won their second Dual Team State Championship after finishing second to Avery County last season and in 2020. There was no Dual Team Championship in 2020-21 sue to Covid 19.

The win also marks coach Chris Waddell's 700th career coaching victory.
