Asheboro improved to 9-1 on the year with the home win against Glenn High School on Thursday.

Rachel Luna scored three goals and Mattie McGee scored two for the Blue Comets who also got a goal each from Addie Shaw, Annabeth Trotter and Jenna Richardson. Trotter and Jenna Brinkley each had two assists.

SOFTBALL

Southern Alamance 2, SW Randolph 1

The Cougars received single hits from Alex Coleman, Hailee Cagle, Samantha Lagrama, Emily Johnson, Blair Lamb and a double by Heaven Maness but dropped to 4-3 in the Mid-Piedmont Conference with the 2-1 loss.

BASEBALL

Providence Grove 10, Wheatmore 2

Providence Grove totalled 11 hits in the game, including a first inning homer by Levi Adams, enroute to their tenth win of the season. Drew Needham, Kaleb Lowe and Jacob Switzer had multiple hits for the Patriots.

Evan Stern earned the win with five innings of work. Stern struck out eight while allowing two runs on six hits. Switzer pitched the final two innings.

Nick Halo pitched two innings for the Warriors and took the loss. Bryce Lowe was 2 for 4 at the plate.

Southeast Guilford 13, Asheboro 4

Asheboro's Austin Curry hit a three run home run in the fourth inning but it wasn't enough to overcome a strong outing by Southeast Guilford Thursday night. Twelve Falcon hits, including four doubles, along with five Asheboro errors led to the Falcon's 13-4 conference win in Pleasant Garden.

Trevor Marsh pitched three innings and suffered the loss.

Jax Hackett picked up the win for the Falcons.

Asheboro defeated High Point Central 11-2 Wednesday.

Brooks Gillespie had 4 goals, Luke Lamason and Garrett Harvell scored two apiece for Asheboro with single goals by John Cernava, Jonah Hydzik and Beli Perez. Cernava also had three assists and Gillespie had two.

BASEBALL

Union Pines 8, Eastern Randolph 7 (11 innings)

Eric Kidd pitched six and two-third innings and suffered the loss at Union Pines. Christian Moon threw four innings and each allowed two earned runs.

Nyk Foland recorded three hits for the Wildcats with two hits each for Moon, Mason Canoy and Chase McCallum.

Randleman's Trey Cooper struck out 12 batters in six innings Wednesday and Matt Kemp recorded two more in a single inning of work.

The Cougars led from the second inning until the Falcons scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at four. Heaven Maness led off the bottom of the 7th with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored the winning run on a ground-out by Chelsey Auman.

Maness, Hailee Cagle, Casey Hatley and Blair Lamb had doubles for Southwestern Randolph. Autumn Springer got the win in relief.

Eastern Randolph 9, Trinity 5 (8)

The Bulldogs and Wildcats needed an extra inning Tuesday night before Courtnee Carter's grand slam ended the game in 'walk off' fashion.

LACROSSE

Gabe Parks set a new school record with 19 saves in goal as Asheboro defeated Williams 14-9 in a conference match Tuesday.

John Cernava had six goals for the Blue Comets. Brooks Gillespie had four goals and two assists, Luke Lamason had two goals and two assists. Jonah had seven ground balls and Marcos Cabanas had five ground balls controlled.

BASEBALL

Providence Grove 7, Wheatmore 0

Connor Patterson earned the shutout win giving up four hits in seven innings of work. Patterson walked one and struck out 11 while the Patriot defense played error-free ball. Connor Cox took the loss.

Patterson had three of Providence Grove's 10 hits.

Gabe Hernandez was 2 for 3 for the Warriors.

Southeast Guilford 4, Southwestern Randolph 2  (8)

The Cougars scored two in the fifth inning only to see the Falcons tie the game in the sixth. Southwestern Randolph loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but could not score but Southeast Guilford was able to score two in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch and a bases loaded walk.

Bryce Marsh struck out 11 in seven and a third innings with no walks.

Marsh and Parker LaPlant had two hits each for the Cougars. Braxton Davis drove in both runs.

March 27, 2018 – Monday Baseball Capsule

Providence Grove 7, Bishop McGuinness 3

The Providence Grove Patriots took the lead for good in the fourth inning when Drew Needham drove in three runs with a triple. Needham, Evan Stern and Connor Patterson each had multiple hits as the Patriots recorded 11 in the game.

Ben Campbell earned the win pitching five innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out eight. Griffin Payne threw two innings in relief. The Patriots played error-free ball.

Anthony Azar took the loss for the Bishop McGuinness Villians, allowing eight hits and five runs over five innings. He also led the Villians with a 3 for 4 performance at the plate.

Eastern Randolph scored the final five runs of the game for a 12-8 non-conference win at Asheboro Monday night. Eric Kidd was 5 for 5 with two runs scored for the Wildcats. Jayden Shepard was 3 for 4 with a run and two RBI. Mason Canoy got the win after relieving starter Colton Craven in the fifth inning.

Asheboro's Garrett Foland was the third of four pitchers used and took the loss. Austin Curry had three hits. Dawson Davis and Avery Jones had two hits each.

SW Randolph 13, Trinity 5

Southwestern Randolph scored seven runs in the fourth inning to break away from a 3-3 tie at Trinity and went on to win the non-conference game 13-5.

Carson Clapp, Jonathan Owens and Chris Hardin had three hits apiece for the Cougars with Hardin driving in five runs.

For the Bulldogs, Alejandro Gonzalez had two hits and scored three runs.

SWR had four errors in the game while Trinity had six.

*Evan Stern went the distance for Providence Grove in a 3-0 win at Trinity Friday night.

Stern gave up two sixth inning singles with one walk and eight strike outs in the win. He also went 3 for 4 at the plate. Drew Needham was 2 for 3.

Cole McCrary took the loss for Trinity with 10 strike outs in 6 and two-thirds innings pitched.

Eastern Randolph's bats were not bothered by the cold weather Tuesday night as the Wildcats recorded 17 hits in their conference win against Wheatmore.

Kelsey Craven had a solo home run to lead of the bottom of the fourth inning and Olivia Hall hit a three run shot in the fifth. Crave and Marion Goins each had two hits in the game. Savannah Beaver and Jessica McNeill had three hits apiece.

Beaver got the win for the Wildcats facing two batters over the minimum in six innings of work. She struck out nine with 1 hit and no walks.

March 17, 2018 – Friday Baseball

Randleman defeated Providence Grove 2 to 1 in 11 innings Friday.

The Tigers registered their only 2 hits of the game in the bottom of the 11th inning and then scored the winning run on a dropped third strike. When the Patriots catcher threw to first base to record the 2nd out of the 11th inning, Matt Kemp stole home and beat the return throw to home.

Evan Stern had two hits for Providence Grove and, on the mound, struck out 8 in six innings pitched with four walks and one run. Jacob Switzer pitched four and two-thirds innings with 10 strike outs and one run allowed.

The Randleman pitchers were Matt Kemp, 7 innings with 10 strike outs, two walks and one run, and Dawson Edwards who pitched four shutout innings.

Southwestern Randolph defeated Walter Williams 8-0.
Autumn Springer was the winning pitcher with 7 strike outs, 5 hits, and no walks.
Hailee Cagle led the Cougar offense with five RBI off a double and a three run home run

Baseball

Wheatmore defeated Trinity 9-4 in 8 innings.
With the game tied at three after 7 innings, Wheatmore broke on top with a 6 run eighth inning and held on for the 9-4 final in PAC 7 Conference play.
Connor Cox had 3 hits and 3 RBI for Wheatmore while Gabe Hernandez (3 runs scored) and Bryce Lowe (2 RBI) each had two. Hernandez pitched the eighth inning for the win.
Brian Lemly had two hits and two RBI for Trinity.

Track & Field

Wheatmore Track hosted Randleman and St. Thomas More Academy on Thursday in an
exciting meet with several close finishes. Wheatmore finished 2nd as a team for both men and women.
Outstanding WHS performances included:
   - Neva Hippert finished 2nd in the 400 meter dash and set a school record with a time of 1:08.3.
   - The women's 4x800 relay finished 1st (Meredith Cunha, Morgan Cunha, Katie Fritz, Micheleigh Higgins).
   - Khali Winningham finished 1st in the 100 hurdles.
   - Nathan Christenbury finished first in the triple jump.
   - Danae Henderson finished 1st in the 100 meter dash.

Southwestern Randolph defeated Eastern Randolph 11-5

Kevin Newlin and Braxton Davis each pitched one inning for the Cougars while Blake Marsh threw 5 innings, allowing 4 hits, 4 runs with 3 walks and 7 strike outs.

Offensively, the Cougars recorded 15 hits including Davis (3 for 4 with 2 doubles, 3 RBI), Parker LaPlant (3 for 4 with 3 runs), Marsh (2 for 4 with 2 RBI).

Eastern Randolph's Landon Smith had 2 hits including a home run.

Baseball

Wheatmore defeated Trinity 4-1

Gabe Hernandez and Connor Cox combined on a one-hitter as Wheatmore picked up their first conference win Thursday night. Hernandez pitched an inning and a third allowing the single run in the first inning and the one hit (Tyler Bova) in the second. Cox then retired 15 straight Bulldogs before Brian Lemly drew a walk in the seventh inning. Cox had 10 strikeouts.

Trinity's Monroe Presnell took the loss even though he held the Warriors hitless until Nick Halo singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning. Another hit (Hunter Smith), a walk and a hit batter saw Wheatmore break a 1-1 tie for their first lead of the game and Presnell left the mound in favor of Garrett Allen who gave up one more hit as Jeremiah Hodge drove in the final run.

For the Cougars, Heaven Maness had 3 hits, including a triple, and 2 runs scored. Samantha Lagrama had 2 hits and a run scored. Alex Coleman had a triple and 2 RBI. Hailee Cagle had the game winning triple in the 12th.

March 13, 2018 – Asheboro High School graduate Parker Clayton (Class of '17) has been honored as the USA South Conference Baseball Rookie of the Week.

March 11, 2018 Kobe Morgan, a senior at Providence Grove High School has signed with Averett University for football. Morgan has been a leader in passes defended for the Patriots defense the last two seasons with 4 interceptions. He also returned two kick-offs for touchdowns his senior year.

Averett University is located in Danville, Virginia where the Cougars play in the USA South Athletic Conference.


March 10, 2018 – Game Capsule

Southwestern Randolph Cougar baseball defeated Eastern Guilford 15-4 on Friday thanks to eight runs in the fourth inning. Blake Marsh, Mikey Miller, Bryce Marsh, Chris Hardin, Paxton Staker, and Carson Clapp all drove in runs in the frame.

The Cougars opened up the scoring in the first inning, when Luke Johnson singled in one run.

Parker LaPlant surrendered two runs on six hits over four innings, striking out five. Marsh threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Trey Hunt took the loss for Eastern Guilford. He surrendered 13 runs on 11 hits over three and two-thirds innings, striking out three.

Southwestern Randolph racked up 14 hits on the night with multiple hits by LaPlant, Johnson, Marsh, Marsh, and Braxton Davis. LaPlant went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the team.

SWR Varsity Softball lost to Eastern Guilford 5-4.

Offensively, Heaven Maness went 2-4 with a triple, Alex Coleman went 2-3 with a triple and a RBI, Samantha Lagrama went 1-4 with a 2 run HR and Hailee Cagle went 1-2 with a double.

Wheatmore Warriors baseball watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in an 11-1 loss to Randleman on Friday. 

An error scored one run for Randleman in the second inning. Then Randleman scored eight runs in the fourth. The big inning was driven by singles by Tyler Yates, Dominick Poole, and Dawson Edwards, an error on a ball put in play by Mason Matthews and Ramsey Petty, and a walk by Koty Ransom.

Matt Kemp was credited with the victory for Randleman. He allowed one hit and one run over five innings, striking out seven and walking one.  Poole threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Connor Cox took the loss for Warriors. He lasted five innings, allowing five hits and nine runs while striking out eight.

Bryce Lowe and Jeremiah Hodge each collected one hit to lead the Warriors.

Randleman was sure-handed and didn't commit a single error.

Wheatmore ran at South Davidson on Wednesday, 3/7. The men's team finished 4th and the women's team finished 3rd out of 5 teams. Both teams were only a few points from 2nd place.

Providence Grove - Eastern Randolph Baseball

Thursday's game against Eastern Randolph was a heartbreaker for Providence Grove, as they lost the lead late in a 5-1 defeat. The game was tied at one with Eastern Randolph batting in the top of the ninth when Eric Cheek singled , scoring two runs.

Providence Grove lost despite out-hitting Eastern Randolph Wildcats five to three.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Providence Grove tied the game at one when Jacob Switzer singled in one run.

Michael Glasgow earned the victory on the pitcher's mound for the Wildcats. He allowed no hits or runs over two innings, striking out three and walking one.

Jordan Hodges took the loss for Providence Grove. He allowed three hits and four runs over two innings, striking out five and walking one.

Connor Patterson started the game for Providence Grove Patriots. He surrendered one run on no hits over seven innings, striking out 20 and walking one. Colton Craven started for Eastern Randolph. He allowed five hits and one run over seven innings, striking out three and walking none.

March 8, 2018 – From Trinity High School

Trinity High School has officially hired their new volleyball coach for the 2018-2019 School Year. Trinity's new Varsity Coach will be Rodney Kirby.

Coach Kirby is a graduate of Trinity High School and Coached at Trinity before the split.  He was then at Wheatmore High School where he built an amazing volleyball program.

Coach Kirby has been working at the college level for the last year and was officiating some before that.

We are excited to have Coach Kirby on board here at Trinity High School.

Nothing came easy for the Warriors on Wednesday, as they fell 10-0 to Randleman
Trey Cooper took the win for Randleman. He surrendered zero runs on two hits over
four innings, striking out seven.  Dawson Edwards threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Gabe Hernandez took the loss for Warriors. He allowed four hits and seven runs over three and a third innings, striking out six.

The medalist for the match was Sean Bryant from WCA.

The Cougars were led by senior Tristan Pugh, who carded a 46 in extreme conditions.

Justin Jarrett, a junior, had a 47. Cameron Cagle and Cody Russell, both seniors, each shot a 51.

Other team member scores were Nathan Cagle, a senior, with a 58 and Ethan Reynolds,
a senior, with a 61.

March 6, 2018 –  Even though UNC-Pembroke baseball dropped 2 of 3 games at Young Harris College (GA) over the weekend, the Braves are off to a hot start in 2018, with a 12-3 overall record, 6-3 in the Peach Belt Conference and are the 12th ranked team in last week's Division II poll by the NCBWA.

Freshman left-hander Landen Smith (WHS '17) picked up his first collegiate win on February 24th against Lander University (SC) before suffering his first loss this past Saturday at Young Harris.

Redshirt freshman Trevor Clemons (RHS '16) is leading the team with a .452 batting average. Clemons has started 13 of the team's 15 games and has hit two home runs.

Still waiting his turn for the Braves is freshman Dawson Painter (UCA '17). Painter excelled both at the plate and on the mound during his high school career.

The Braves continue their road trip with games at Coker College (SC) and Columbus State (GA) before returning home to face Reece Daniel (SWR '15) and the 9th ranked Wingate Bulldogs on Tuesday, March 13.

March 6, 2018 – From Southwestern Randolph High School

The Southwestern Randolph Boy's Golf team began their 2018 season Monday with a non-conference match at Forest Oaks Country Club against Providence Grove High School and Southeast Guilford High School.

Southwestern Randolph won with a team score of 174.

Individual scores for the Cougars were, Cameron Cagle - 39, Nathan Cagle – 42, Tristan Pugh - 44, and Justin Jarrett - 49. Cameron was also the medalist for the match with a 39. His chip-in eagle from 110 yards on hole #16 was his second eagle on this course.  He chipped in for an eagle last season on hole #8.

Leading scorer for Providence Grove was Braxton Lineberry with a 41 and a team score of 176.

Leading scorer for Southeast Guilford was Hogan Kohl with a 44 and a team score of 178.

Other team members for Southwestern Randolph include Ethan Reynolds - 55, Jordan Reynolds - 59, Cody Russell - 60, and Landon Smith - 62.

The Cougars next match will be Wednesday, March 7th against Wesleyan Christian at Oak Hollow Country Club. Tee time will be 3:30.

March 3, 2018 – Friday game capsules

Eastern Randolph softball

Eastern Randolph picked up their 1st win of the season against East. Montgomery 17-2 in 3 innings.

Courtnee Carter was the winning pitcher striking out 4 and allowing 4 hits. She also added a hit at the plate.

Notable batters were Marion Goins who went 3-3 & 3 RBI. Kelsey Craven and Brooklyn Rush also went 2-3 with 2 RBI apiece.

Record is 1-1 and next game will start Conference play Tuesday against rival Providence Grove.

Southwestern Randolph softball

SWR Softball defeated Trinity Friday 11-1.

Heaven Maness had 2 triples. Courtney Chriscoe went 4-5 with a double. Blair Lamb went 2-3. Casey Hatley went 2-3.

Autumn Springer got the win in the circle giving up only 1 run on 3 hits and striking out 6.

Wheatmore baseball

Warriors defeated Bishop McGuinness 15-2 on Friday thanks to eight runs in a big third inning. 

Camdon Wishon, Jeremiah Hodge, Dawson Payne, Gabe Hernandez, Bryce Lowe, and  Matt Owens each had RBI in the big inning.

Connor Cox took the win for Warriors. He lasted five innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out 11 and walking zero.

Anthony Azar took the loss for Bishop McGuinness. He lasted one and one-third innings, allowing five hits and four runs while striking out three and walking one.

Warriors scattered 18 hits in the game.  Hunter Smith, Owens, Hernandez, and Wishon each managed three hits to lead Warriors.  Warriors tore up the base paths, as four players stole at least two bases. Hernandez led the way with three.

Warriors didn't commit a single error in the field. Pat Kendrick had 11 chances in the field, the most on the team.
