Blake Marsh had 10 strike outs in 5 innings of work for the Cougar win. Marsh, Paxton Staker, Braxton Davis and Caleb Clapp had 2 hits apiece.

April 30, 2019 DUAL TEAM TENNIS

Three Randolph County men's tennis teams qualified for the 2019 state playoffs which begin Wednesday.

Piedmont Athletic Conference champion Trinity (10-1) will host St Pauls High School (12-4) in the first round while second seed Providence Grove (8-3) will travel to NC School of Science & Math (10-0).

Southwestern Randolph (11-3) finished second in the Mid-Piedmont Conference and will travel to Cox Mill High School (14-2) for a first round match on Wednesday. MPC champion Williams (12-1) will host the conference's third place team, Southeast Guilford (11-3), which qualified as a wild card.

Gracie Gibbs was 2 for 3 at the plate for Trinity who also got hits from Kara Henderson, Christen Rosenbaum, Sydney Kearns and Abba Willard.

Travis Boone's 2 rbi single was the walk-off game winner. Zander Smith pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief and got the win.

Ramsey Petty and Jake Johnson had 2 hits apiece for Randleman. Matt Kemp had 2 rbi.

Tatum Marsh and Trevor Marsh each had 3 hits and scored 2 runs for Asheboro. Levi Kinney had 2 hits, including a double, with 2 rbi. Seven errors doomed the Blue Comets as those led to 12 un-earned runs for Southwest Guilford.

The Cougars jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and held on for the non-conference win.

The Patriots got a five inning perfect game from Makenna Sibbett in their regular season finale. Sibbett struck out 4 without allowing any hits, walks or errors. Alli Young (triple), Maddie Hunt and Sam Welch (triple) had 2 hits each in the win.

Hunt, Welch and Makayla McClain were 3 for 3 in the earlier game against TW Andrews. Carson Williams was 2 for 2 with a pair of doubles. Samantha Craven got the win.

Bryce Marsh (SWR '18) has been named baseball Rookie of the Year in the USA South Conference. Marsh led all rookies in the conference in six key categories including a .381 average and six home runs.

Marsh joins his Pfeiffer teammate, and former Post 45 standout, Kirby Lambert (North Moore '15) as members of the 2019 USA South All-Conference First Team and Nathan Ray (SWR '17) who was voted onto the All-Conference Second Team.

Braxton Davis struck out 7 in five innings of work for the win. The Cougars got 2 hits each from Carson Clapp (HR, 3 rbi, 2 runs), Caleb Clapp (double, 2 runs), Parker LaPlant (2 runs) and Davis (double, rbi, run).

Warrior bats produced 16 hits with 3 by Gabe Hernandez (single, double, triple, 3 rbi, 2 runs) and 2 each by Nick Halo (rbi, run), Cam Wishon (2 runs), Rylan Smith (rbi, 3 runs), Rob Hales (2 rbi, run) and Hunter Smith. Nick Halo pitched three and a third innings and got the win.

Beaver also had 8 strikeouts, 3 put outs and 3 assists from the circle. Courtnee Carter (2 runs) and Aniyah King (1 run) had 2 hits each for ER. Olivia Hall picked up 3 rbi with a bases-loaded double.

Sarah Rice struck out 12 for the Tigers. Aaliyah Ratcliffe's single with 2 outs in the bottom of the seventh was Randleman's only hit.

Asheboro 9, SW Randolph 5

The Blue Comets jumped out to a 9 run lead then held on for the MPC win. Asheboro, Southwestern and Southern Alamance finish the conference season tied with 10-2 records

Kennedy Thrift had 2 triples and scored twice for the Warriors. Skyler Swaney got the complete game win.

Conner Cox got the complete game win with 11 strike outs as Gabe Hernandez led Wheatmore at the plate. Hernandez was 2 for 2 with 2 ealks and 3 runs scored. Kenyon Crotts and Graham Bryant had 2 hits apiece for Trinity.

Levi Adams had 3 hits (HR), 3 runs and 3 rbi to lead the Patriot's offense. Luke Thomas added 2 hits (double), 2 runs and 2 rbi. Jordan Hodges pitched 5 and two-thirds innings in the win.

Parker LaPlant got the complete game win allowing 5 hits with 9 strikeouts. Paxton Staker had a 3-run home run for the Cougars and both Carson Clapp and Caleb Clapp had multi-rbi hits in the game.

Morgan Cunha finished 4th in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs.
Neva Hippert finished 1st in pole vault and 2nd in the 400 meter dash and 800 meter run.
Rosie Langendorfer finished 2nd in the 100 meter hurdles and 3rd in the 300 meter hurdles.
The girls' 4x200 relay finished 2nd (Emma Atwell, Rosie Langendorfer, Madelyn McQuaigue, and Erin Lambeth)

John Cernava scored 4 goals and set a program record with 73 career goals at Asheboro High School. Brooks Gillespie had 4 goals and an assist which set a new assist record for the Blue Comets. Garrett Harvell scored 1 goal and Steven Roberson recorded 2 assists. Gabe Parks had 13 saves in goal.

Matt Kemp pitched 5 innings for the win with Dawson Edwards pitching 2 shutout innings in relief. Dawson Edwards had 2 hits for the Tigers who scored 3 of their runs on wild pitches.

Both teams scored 5 runs in the fourth inning but Lee County added another in the sixth and held on for the win.

From SWR: The Southwestern Randolph Boy's golf team ended it's season today with another victory.  In a match hosted by Eastern Guilford, the Cougars posted a team score of 212.

The match was won by Williams High School with a team score of 164. 

Medalist for the match was Asheboro's, Sam Davidson who shot a 37.  

Playing in ideal weather conditions at Stoney Creek Country Club, several Cougars posted their best
scores of the season.  Ending the season on a positive note and leading the Cougars once again was John McDowell who shot a 44.  Others with the same bright future and contributing to the team score were Justin Gillespie, 52; Logan Walker, 57; and Jordan Reynolds, 59.  Also playing today were Nicholas Cagle, 62; and Tyler Hill, 64.

The Jets scored twice in the first inning then held off the Warriors for the win. Connor Cox had 2 of Wheatmore's 3 hits and the rbi.

A tight game erupted with an 11 run sixth inning for Randleman followed by 7 Wildcat runs in the bottom of the sixth. For the Tigers, Conner Sterling had 4 hits (3 runs), Dominick Poole had 3 hits (2 rbi), Brooks Brannon had 2 hits (3 rbi) and Dawson Edwards recorded 2 hits (3 runs) and picked up the win in relief.
ER got 2 hits each from Nyk Foland (3 rbi), Jayden Shepard (2 rbi) and Cade Snotherly (2 runs).

Providence Grove 15, Southwest Guilford 11

Drew Needham hit 2 home runs (4 rbi) and Levi Adams hit another as part of his 3 hit (6 rbi) night. Zander Smith added 2 Patriots hits as well. Jordan Hodges pitched 2 innings and got the win.

Blake Marsh earned the win with 4 and two-thirds innings of work. Braxton Davis (HR) and Blaine Powell each had 3 hits for the Cougars.

From SWR: The Southwest Randolph Boy's golf team posted it's second and third win of the season today.  They beat Eastern Guilford in the conference tournament at Alamance Country Club with a team score of 401.

The tournament was won by Williams High School. 

Medalist for the match was Garrett Clark of Williams with a score of 68.  Second place overall was Sam Davidson of Asheboro with a 71.

This was an 18 hole match played under extreme wet conditions. Despite these obstacles and having never played the back nine, the Cougars posted multiple individual best scores. Led by John McDowell with a front nine 43 and a back nine 45 for a total of 88, the Cougars were once again able to defeat Eastern Guilford.  Contributing to this team score were Tyler Hill, 51/51=102; Jordan Reynolds, 54/49=103; and Nicholas Cagle, 53/55=108.

Other Cougar scores were Justin Gillespie, 56/56=112; and Logan Walker, 60/64=124.   The Cougars will play again on Thursday, April 11 at Stoney Creek Golf Club in a conference match hosted by Eastern Guilford.

John Cernava scored twice, including the game winner in overtime, for Asheboro which also got 2 goals from Brooks Gillespie and another by Mardicia Lowrey. Comaggio Brady had an assist. The defense was led by Jonah Hydzik and Thomas Gawf, and by Gabe Parks who had 10 saves in goal.

TRACK & FIELD

Trinity at Southern Lee Invitational - COMPLETE RESULTS

Trinity Track & Field teams competed in the Pepsi Invitational at Southern Lee High School Saturday along with 19 other women's teams and 17 other men's teams.

Burlington Cummings women and Southern Lee men won the team competitions with the Bulldogs placing 16th in the women's standings and the mens team finishing 13th.

Standout performances included Jessica McQueen finishing 3rd in the 100 and 400 meter races, and 4th in the 200 meter dash.

Kaitlyn Sessions placed in the top 20 in both discus and shot put.

Omer Jamil finished top 20 in both 1600 and 3200 meter runs.

The Men's 4x800 meter relay team finished 4th.

In men's high jump Colby Short and Austin Shelar placed 5th and 6th.

Braxton Davis had 3 hits with 3 rbi and 2 runs scored to lead the Cougars offensively. Blake Marsh and Kevin Newlin added 2 hits apiece. Carson Clapp got the win in relief.
A grand slam by Jordan Hodges gave the Patriots an 8-3 lead in the fourth inning. Hodges' 2 hits and 5 rbi led the PG offense.

From SWR: Southwestern Randolph Boys Golf hosted a conference tournament today and recorded it's first conference victory over Eastern Guilford.  The match was played at Tot Hill Farm Country Club and the Cougars finished 5th overall but beat Eastern Guilford by 16 strokes. 

Walter M. Williams High School won the match with Asheboro finishing second. Medalist for the match was Garrett Hauk from Williams who shot a 36. 

The Cougars were led once again by John McDowell who shot a 49. Cougar team mates Jordan Reynolds-53; Tyler Hill-53; Justin Gillespie-60 combined with John's 49 to shoot a team score of 215.  Logan Walker shot a 66 and NIcholas Cagle shot a 67. 

The Cougars next match will be Monday, April 8 at Stony Creek Country Club.

From WHS: Wheatmore track & field hosted Providence Grove, Eastern Randolph, and Jordan Matthews on Thursday.  The Wheatmore girls finished 1st while the boys finished 4th.

Outstanding Performances:

   - Rosie Langendorfer finished 2nd in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.
   - Neva Hippert finished 1st in the 800 meter run and pole vault and 2nd in the 100 meter dash and long jump.
   - The girls' 4x200 relay finished first (Emma Atwell, Rosie Langendorfer, Madelyn McQuaigue, Erin Lambeth)
   - The boys' 4x200 relay finished first (Andrew Earnhardt, Jonathan Fuentes, Christian Tate, Caleb Gundaker)

Eastern Randolph.The match was played at Tot Hill Farm Country Club with almost perfect weather for golf, finally!

The match was won by Eastern Randolph with a team score of 204 and were led by match medalist, Wyatt Wright who carded a 45.

The Cougars were led by John McDowell who shot a 52. Also contributing to the team score of 213, were Jordan Reynolds, 53; Tyler Hill, 53; and Justin Gillespie, 55.
Other Cougar scores were Nicholas Cagle, 57 and Logan Walker, 59.

The Cougars next match will be tomorrow, April 4th, at Tot Hill Farm. This will be a conference match and tee time is 4:00.
