November 27, 2017 – From Wheatmore High School

The Wheatmore wrestling team scored 142 points to win the Tigerland Classic
hosted by Ragsdale on Saturday.

Ethan Oakley (126) and Chase McKinney (152) took first place.  Hayden Caldwell (106), Jared Niemitalo (132), and Devin Daugherty (285) finished in second place.  Conner Nelson (120), Brentley Aikens (195), and Joey Ferguson (220) took third place.  Seth Miller (113) and Damon Hudspeth (138) took fourth.

Wheatmore's Ethan Oakley was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler.

Wheatmore will travel to Ledford on Tuesday.

The 2AA football playoff bracket has been narrowed to eight teams including the Randleman Tigers who are making their eighth consecutive appearance in the state playoffs. 2017 marks the program's 17th season in the post-season since the Tiger's last State Championship in 1983, but the first time in those 34 years that Randleman has won their way past the second round.

Piedmont Athletic Conference Champion Randleman is joined in the East Regional semi-finals by East Central Conference Champ East Duplin, Northern Carolina Champion South Granville and Central Carolina Champ North Davidson.

The four teams remaining in the western bracket are Rocky River Conference Champion Mount Pleasant, Mountain 6 Conference Champ Franklin, Northwestern Foothills Champion Hibriten and Southwestern Conference #2 seed Shelby.

Shelby eliminated the SWC champion South Point last week and have won four straight state championships, last year's 2AA title and the 2A crowns in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

November 21, 2017 - Grady Lawson passed away Monday at the age of 88. Lawson is well-known for his support of youth and youth athletics in Randolph County and served for decades on the Randolph County Board of Education.

The former Athletic Director for American Legion Post 81 baseball was inducted into the North Carolina American Legion Hall of Fame in 1983.

In 1984 Lawson was named to the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest honor given by the Governor of North Carolina “for persons who have made significant contributions to the state and their communities through their exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments.”

In September, Lawson was honored as an inaugural member of the Eastern Randolph High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

The Randleman Tigers have a home game Friday night in the second round of the 2AA football playoffs against the Nash Central Bulldogs.

Randleman defeated Roanoke Rapids last week 43-7 while Nash Central (10-2) eliminated PAC 7 member TW Andrews by the score of 41-7.

The Bulldogs finished the regular season in a three way tie for first place in the Eastern Plains Conference going 4-1 along with Southwest Edgecombe and Beddingfield.

The winner will face the winner of #1 East Duplin vs #9 West Stokes in round three.

November 11, 2017 – Football playoffs

The Randleman Tigers advanced to the second round of the football playoffs with a 43-7 win over Roanoke Rapids Friday night at Gregory Stadium. The win marks the first time Randleman has played in round two since 2014. As the #4 seed in the 2AA east bracket, the Tigers will host #5 Nash Central on November 17th.

Nash Central eliminated TW Andrews 41-7 Friday night.

Wheatmore traveled to South Columbus for a first round game which saw the Warriors fall 14-0 to the Stallions. Wheatmore's season ends with a record of 9-3.

Wheatmore's nine wins this season is the most in the program's history but the two losses came against conference opponents – Randleman and TW Andrews – which got the Warriors into the state playoffs as an 'at large' team and a road game in the first round.

South Columbus finished in a three way tie for first place in the Three Rivers 1A/2A Conference with East Bladen and Whiteville. The Stallions' only loss came against Whiteville in last week's season finale.

The winner will face the winner of Graham vs Linconton in round two.

Randleman won the Piedmont Athletic Conference with a single loss which came just over two months ago, 27-21 to Ledford, a #7 seed in the 2AA west.

The Yellowjackets started the season with seven straight wins but ended with losses in three of their last four games. Roanoke Rapids ended up in a tie for third place in the Northern Carolina 1A/2A Conference.

November 9, 2017 – Randolph County soccer came to and close for 2017 when Southwestern Randolph was eliminated from the 3A playoffs at Cox Mill High School Wednesday night. The Cougars end the season with a record of 22-4-0.

November 6, 2017 – Soccer playoffs

Southwestern Randolph (22-3-0) has advanced to the third round of the state soccer playoffs and will play at Cox Mill High School in Concord at 6:30 Wednesday evening.

The Chargers (15-4-3) are champions of the South Piedmont Conference and have made it to the fourth round of the playoffs each of the last two years before being eliminated.

Cox Mill defeated North Iredell 2-1 in overtime in the first round of this year's tournament and then won 3-0 over Tuscola High School in round two.

The Cougars tied with Burlington's Walter Williams High School at the top of the Mid-Piedmont Conference standings and have home playoff wins over West Henderson (5-3) and Watauga (1-0).

The other teams remaining in the Cougar's side of the western bracket are also conference champions or co-champions. Top seed A C Reynolds (Asheville) finished in a tie for first place in the Western Mountain Conference while #8 seed Forestview (Gastonia) won the Big South Conference.


November 4, 2017 – Emma Luther led the Randolph County runners who qualified for today's State Championship in Cross Country. The Eastern Randolph freshman finished in ninth place in the 2A women's race at Ivy Redmon Park in Kernersville. Luther was selected to the 2017 All-State Cross Country Team.

Another freshman runner, Olivia Frankel of Providence Grove finished 55th out of 169 racers in the women's event.

Also in the championship run were sophomores Ellen Moore of Eastern Randolph who finished 108th and Trinity's Victoria Abate in 142nd.

The men's event featured the Randleman Tiger's, one of 23 teams which qualified to race for a team championship. The Tigers finished 18th in the team competition.

Seniors led the way among the Randolph County men with Noe Mercado leading the Tigers with an 88th place finish. Nick Gimble finished 99th for Randleman with Grayson Browder of Providence Grove finishing 102nd, and Nick Malpass of Eastern Randolph crossing the line in 118th. Other Tigers in the championship event were sophomores Benjamin Garcia (109) and William Flores (141), juniors Brad Cassidy (160) and Khalid Abdul-Matin (185) and senior Mason Matthews (178).

November 4, 2017 – Football playoffs

Only two Randolph County teams are in the 2017 North Carolina Football Playoffs.

The Randleman Tigers, champions of the Piedmont Athletic Conference is seeded 4th in the 2AA East and will host #13 Roanoke Rapids in the first round Friday, November 10th.

Wheatmore finished in a tie for second place in the PAC with TW Andrews High School but got lost out on an automatic bid due to Andrews winning the team's head-to-head meeting. The Warriors qualified as an 'at large' entry into the playoffs and travel to South Columbus in the 2A East Regional.

Andrews also travels in round one with a match-up at Nash Central.

In the Mid-Piedmont Conference, Eastern Guilford and Southeast Guilford got the two automatic bids with Walter Williams gaining an 'at large' spot.


November 4, 2017 – It's a very busy Saturday in high school sports across North Carolina with State Championships to be determined in Cross Country, Volleyball and Team Tennis.

The second round of the soccer playoffs are scheduled for most teams and, at some point today, expect the pairings to be released for the football playoffs.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Cross Country Championships will be held at Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville with runners from four Randolph County schools competing. The 2A Men's Championship begins at 3:00 pm with Randleman's team racing for a team title along with runners from Providence Grove and Eastern Randolph racing for the individual championship.

The 2A Women's Championship will start at 4:00 pm featuring individual racers from Eastern Randolph, Trinity and Providence Grove.

The racing starts at 10:00 this morning with the 1A men's event followed at thirty minute intervals by the 3A men, 1A women and 3A women. An awards presentation willow follow the final race of the morning session.

This afternoon, the 2A men will be followed by the 4A men, 2A women and 4A women. The awards presentation for the afternoon session will close out the day in Kernersville.

DUAL TEAM TENNIS

The 2017 Team Tennis Championships are being hosted by Burlington Tennis Center with the 1A and 3A matches starting at 9:30 am followed by the 2A and 4A championships at 12:30 pm.

Volleyball

Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh will host today's State Volleyball Championships. The 1A match starts at 12 noon followed by the 2A championship at 2:30, 3A at 5:00 and the 4A match is scheduled for 7:30 this evening.

SOCCER

Asheboro got the second round of the men's soccer playoffs started Friday night as the Blue Comets season came to an end with a 1-0 loss at Chapel Hill High School.

Other area teams will be in action today with Southwestern Randolph hosting Watauga High School at 5:00 pm. Wheatmore will be home against Southwest Onslow at 6:00 and Randleman plays at Carrboro this evening at 7:00.

November 2, 2017 – American Legion Post 87 and the High Point-Thomasville HiToms have been awarded the 2018 North Carolina Baseball State Championship Tournament.

The event will feature eight teams from around the state during the last week of July. The tournament champion will represent North Carolina in the American Legion Southeast Regional Tournament.

In addition to Legion Baseball's new 7-inning-game format, the 2018 State Tournament will reportedly feature a 'pool play' schedule for the first time.

November 2, 2017 - Soccer playoffs

Four Randolph County teams advanced in the men's soccer playoffs with first round wins Wednesday.

In the 3A East Region, 21st seeded Asheboro Blue Comets defeated the 12th seed Clayton 2-0 and will travel to Chapel Hill High School for a Saturday meeting with the Tigers. Chapel Hill won the Big Eight Conference and eliminated West Johnston 3-0 in the first round.

In the 3A West Regional, #5 Southwestern Randolph defeated 28th seeded West Henderson 5-3 and will host Watauga High School on Saturday. The 12th seeded Pioneers defeated Kannapolis Brown in overtime Wednesday 2-1. Watauga, located in Boone, finished in a tie for second place in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference.

Thirteenth seed Randleman needed penalty kicks to move on in the 2A East Region with a win over #20 Wallace-Rose Hill. Saturday the Tigers will travel to #4 Carrboro to face the Jaguars who eliminated Trinity 3-1 in the first round.

Wheatmore, the 24th seed in the 2A east, traveled to Washington and defeated the ninth seeded Pam Pack 2-0 Wednesday. That gives the Warriors a home game in round two against the 25th seeded Stallions of Southwest Onslow, 1-0 upset winners over #8 North Johnston.

Eastern Randolph was eliminated by top seeded East Duplin 5-0 in 2A east action and Uwharrie Charter fell at #11 Hayesville 3-1.

November 1, 2017 – Volleyball State Champioships

The NCCSA State Volleyball Championships were held last Saturday, October 28, at Alamance Christian School. The 2A title was won by Wilmington Christian Academy (26-6) over Vandalia Christian School (19-4) in three sets. This was Wilmington's fifth consecutive state title.

Three champions from last year will return when the NCHSAA Championships take place this Saturday, November 4, at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh. The 1A match starts at 12 noon followed by the 2A championship at 2:30, 3A at 5:00 and the 4A match is scheduled for 7:30 Saturday evening.

1A: Community School of Davidson (21-1) vs Roxboro Community School (28-2). CSD eliminated RCS in the west regional finals last season on the way to the 2016 1A title.

2A: West Iredell (27-3) vs Carrboro (30-0). Carrboro is the defending 2A champion.

3A: North Iredell (27-2) vs Chapel Hill (25-6). Chapel Hill fell to Cox Mill in last years 3A title match.

4A: Hough (26-5) vs Green Hope (30-2). Hough High School from Cornelius against defending 4A champion Green Hope High School from Cary .
