October 31, 2017 – The 2017 Men's Soccer playoffs begin Wednesday for seven local teams.

Southwestern Randolph finished tied with Williams in the Mid-Piedmont Conference at 10-2-0, 20-3-0 overall. The Cougars return to the playoffs after a one year absence and will host West Henderson High School in first round action. The Falcons are 9-13-1 on the season and finished tied for seventh place in the nine-team Western Mountain Conference.

The Asheboro Blue Comets (9-3-0, 16-3-1) open the soccer playoffs on the road against the Clayton High School Comets. Clayton finished in second place in the Greater Neuse Conference at 7-1-2, 14-6-3.
.
After missing last years playoffs, Randleman will host Wallace-Rose Hill High School in the first round. The Tigers (10-2-0, 11-10-0) finished second to Jordan-Matthews in the Piedmont Athletic Conference while the Bulldogs (9-3-0, 17-4-2) ended the regular season in a tie for second place in the East Central Conference. Wallace-Rose Hill has won three out of the last four 1A State Championships in men's soccer (2013, 2014, 2016).

East Central Conference Champion, East Duplin (11-1-0, 17-3-0) will host Eastern Randolph (5-7-0, 5-11-1) in round one. The Panthers have won 12 straight since losing their first conference game on September 11th.

Wheatmore (8-4-0, 16-5-0) is making their second playoff appearance as the Warriors travel to Washington High School to face the Pam Pack. Washington (11-1-0, 13-4-1) finished as co-champions of the Eastern Carolina Conference and have won their last 11 games.

The Trinity Bulldogs (4-8-0, 10-12-0) travel to Carrboro (12-0-0, 18-2-2) to face the champions of the Mid-State 2A Conference. The Jaguars made it to the state semi-finals last year but started the 2017 season 1-2-2 before reeling off 17 straight wins.

Uwharrie Charter Academy finished the regular season tied for fourth place in the Yadkin Valley Conference and will make their first ever appearance in the soccer playoffs. At 6-8-0, 8-8-0, the Eagles travel to Hayesville High School to face the Yellowjackets (9-3-0, 11-5-1) who tied for second place in the Smoky Mountain Conference.

October 29, 2017 – The 2017 Men's Soccer playoffs begin Wednesday, Nov 1. The NCHSAA will announce team seeding and playoff match-ups on Monday, October 30.

October 29, 2017 – Wheatmore High School reports that even though the Cross Country season ended Saturday, the Warriors went out in style.

Seven runners established new personal record times in the 2A Mid-East Regional in Cary. Morgan Cunha, Madison Gore, Meredith Cunha and Ellie Greene had personal bests in the women's race while Jaxon Kimmons, Tyler Brooks, Luke Greer, Finn Owen ans Jacob Wright set personal records in the men's meet.

Kelsey Burgess and Bailey Albertson ran their fastest races of the season.


October 28, 2017 – Cross Country State Championship

Several Randolph County runners advanced to the State Championship with outstanding performances in regional races.

Emma Luther of Eastern Randolph won the 2A Mid-East Regional in Cary with a time of 18:53. Other runners who will move on to the 2A women's championship race are Olivia Frankel of Providence Grove, Ellen Moore of Eastern Randolph and Victoria Abate of Trinity.

Randleman's men's team is one of five teams that advanced from the Cary regional. The tiger's cross country team consists of Noe Mercado, Nick Gimble, Benjamin Garcia, William Flores, Brad Cassidy, Mason Matthews and Khalid Abdul-Matin.

Individual runners advancing include Grayson Browder of Providence Grove and Nick Malpass of Eastern Randolph.

The 2017 State Championships will be determined Saturday, November 4th at the Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville. The 2A championship races will be held Saturday afternoon with the 2A Men's Championship beginning at 3:00 pm and the Women's Championship at 4:00 pm.

October 27, 2017 - Tennis State Championship Tournament

Maddie Sykes of Trinity advanced through the regionals to the 2A State Tournament at Cary Tennis Park. Sykes was eliminated this morning in the round of 16 by a score of 6-2, 6-2.

Regional events in Cross Country are scheduled for this Saturday, October 28th.

McAlpine Park in Charlotte will host three regionals with men's races starting at 9 am (4A West),
9:30 (3A Mid-West) and 10:00 (3A West). Women's events begin at 10:30 (4A West),
11:00 (3A Mid-West) and 11:30 (3A West).

October 24, 2017 - 2017 GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

Asheboro's Riley Hammer shot 110 on the final round of the 3A Championship at Foxfire Resort for a two-day score of 211. That left the blue comet golfer finishing in a tie for 69th in the tournament.

Hailey Joy of Rockingham County won the 3A championship with a one-over-par 145. For the second straight year, Kayla Smith (Williams) and Katherina Floyd (Northwood) finished tied for second place in the state tournament.

Maddie Hunt of Providence Grove trimmed six strokes off her first round score with a 96 on Tuesday. Hunt finished the tournament at 198, in a tie for 37th place.

Day one leader Katherine Schuster of First Flight High School shot even par for the tournament and won the 2A championship by ten strokes.

October 23, 2017 - State Golf Championship Tournaments

3A GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

Asheboro sophomore Riley Hammer was +29 in the wind and rain at Monday's first round of the 3A Championship Tournament at Foxfire. That puts her in a tie for 58th (of 78) golfers at the mid-point of the 2017 tournament. Hammer shot 50 on the front and 51 on the back for her 101 total.

Last year's fourth place finisher Hailey Joy (Rockingham County) leads at -3 (69). Katharina Floyd (Northwood) and Kayla Smith (W Williams) finished in a tie for second place in 2016. This year, Floyd is currently second (73) and Smith third (75). The high score of the day was 127.

2A GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

Maddie Hunt from Providence Grove is in a tie for 50th place after the first round of the 2A State Championship Golf Tournament. Hunt shot 54 on the front but followed that up with a 48 on the back side Monday at Longleaf Golf Club for a score of 102.

Katherine Schuster (Fr) of First Flight High School leads after one round with a 2-under-par 70. The high score of the day was 134.

Weather conditions are expected to improve in Moore County for Tuesday's final round.

October 22, 2017 - Tennis playoffs - UPDATED

The 2017 women's Tennis Regionals were held this weekend with the first two rounds held Friday then the regional semis and finals on Saturday.

In the 2A Individual Regional in Goldsboro, Wheatmore senior Hailey Mince advanced to the second round before being eliminated. This was Mince's third straight regional appearance.

Maddie Sykes of Trinity finished fourth in the 2A Regional and will advance to the State Championship Tournament which starts Friday at Cary Tennis Park. The Bulldog senior's first opponent will be Nina Bohunska (Jr) of North Johnston High School.

Southwestern Randolph freshman Caeleylaine Price qualified for the 3A Regional in Conocrd. Price was eliminated in the opening round on Friday.

Two local doubles teams qualified for the regionals. Angie Pincus and Georgia Shipley of Asheboro were eliminated in round 1 in the 3A tournament, while Brooklyn Rush and Allie Joines of Eastern Randolph advanced to the second round before being eliminated from the 2A tournament.


October 22, 2017 - Regional golf tournaments

Two Randolph County golfers qualified for the 2017 State Championship Tournaments which are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.

Asheboro's Riley Hammer has a 9:21 tee time Monday morning in the first round of the 3A tournament at Foxfire Resort and Golf Club near Pinehurst. The par 72 course is set for a distance of 5645 yards and will host both rounds of the 3A championship with 8:00 am start times both Monday and Tuesday. All players will start on hole number one.

Maddie Hunt from Providence Grove is scheduled for a 10:10 am start on hole number one in the 2A championship at Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines. Longleaf is also a par 72 course with tees arranged for a distance of 5566 yards. Start time will be 9:00 am each day with players teeing off on both one and ten.

Fayetteville Street Christian School was eliminated from the North Carolina Christian School Volleyball playoffs by Sheets Memorial Christian School of Lexington Friday night.

In the first set, Sheets broke away from a 15-15 tie with a run of seven straight service points on the way to a 25-19 win.

The second game was close at 12-10 before Sheets again pulled away for the 25-15 final.

In the third, Sheets jumped out to a 17-5 lead before Fayetteville Street narrowed the lead with a six point service run by Madison Clark. As in the first two sets though, the Sheets Eagles pulled away for the sweep.

Clark had 5 kills in the match.

Brenna Bestmann had 6 kills and was named to the All-Region Team.

Fayetteville Street finished the 2017 season with the Carolina Christian Conference Championship and an overall record of 11-10.

October 19, 2017 - Tennis Regionals

The Individual Tennis Regionals are Friday and Saturday at various locations around North Carolina.

The 2A Mid-East Regional will take place at Herman Park in Goldsboro. Among the competitors there will be Brooklyn Rush and Allie Joines from Eastern Randolph and Wheatmore's Hailey Mince who will be making her third appearance in the regionals.

Les Myers Park in Concord will host the 3A Mid-West Regional. Angie Pincus and Georgia Shipley of Asheboro will be joined by Caeleylaine Price of Southwestern Randolph.

The 3A regional begins at noon Friday with round one action. Winners will advance to second round play later Friday afternoon.

The regional semi-finals will begin Saturday at 8 am at Concord High School followed by the regional championship. The other regionals will follow a similar schedule.

The state championships are Friday and Saturday, October 27 & 28.


October 19, 2017 – Volleyball playoffs

The High School volleyball playoffs begin Saturday with higher seeded teams hosting lower seeds. Seven of the eight public school teams in Randolph County qualified.

In the 3A East bracket, #7 Asheboro (19-4) will host Mid-Piedmont Conference opponent #26 Southeast Guilford (17-8). Asheboro defeated the Falcons 3-2 and 3-0 during the regular season 3-2 Wednesday night for the conference tournament championship. Saturday's match will start at 4 pm.

Also in the 3A East Region, # 22 Southwestern Randolph (20-6) travels to Greenville to face J H Rose (20-5) at 2 pm. The Rampants finished the season as the top 3A team – second place overall - in the 3A/4A Eastern Carolina Conference. Rose lost to 4A DH Conley in the conference tournament finals 3-0.

Four teams form the Piedmont Athletic Conference are in the volleyball playoffs, all in the 2A East Regional.

#2 seeded Wheatmore (24-0) will host #31 Wallace-Rose Hill (10-9) from the East Central Conference.

Fifth seeded Midway High School (19-2) won the East Central Conference and will host #28 Randleman (9-12) from the PAC 7 Saturday in Dunn.

#30 Trinity (12-11) travels to Barco for a first round match against Currituck County (16-2). The Knights are champions of the Northeastern Coastal Conference.

The Providence Grove Patriots (15-9), seeded 15th, will host #18 J F Webb (17-6) from Oxford. The Warriors finished 3rd in the 1A/2A Northern Carolina Conference.

Uwharrie Charter Academy earned a 16th seed and a home match against #17 Mountain Island Charter (14-6). The Raptor, from Mt Holly, placed 3rd in the PAC 7 1A Conference. Gametime is Saturday at 2 pm.

October 17, 2017 – Asheboro golfer Riley Hammer qualified for the 3A State Championship Tournament with a 15th place finish in the 3A Central Regional on Monday.

The Blue Comet sophomore shot 93 at Greensboro National Golf Club. Other Asheboro golfers who qualified for regional play were Emma Haywood (t-62nd), Olivia Elliot (69th) and Sophia Morgan (74th).

Hailee Cagle led five Southwestern Randolph golfers with a 100 score (t31st). Madison McLeod (t-62nd), Emma Freeman (t-62nd), Shelby Keye (t-66th) and Emma Grubbs (74th) were the other Cougar golfers in the regional.

Hammer will play in the 3A Tournament Monday and Tuesday, October 23-24 at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club (Red Fox Course-5645 yards) in Foxfire Village.

Providence Grove golfer Maddie Hunt advanced to the 1A/2A State Championship Tournament by finishing 16th in the East Regional in Goldsboro today.

The Patriot sophomore shot 99 at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course while her sophomore teammate, Allie Nelson finished at 109.

The 1A/2A Tournament will be at Longleaf Golf & Family Club in Southern Pines on Monday and Tuesday, October 23-24.

October 16, 2017 – Women's Tennis Dual Team playoffs begin Wednesday.

Two teams from the Piedmont Athletic Conference will both travel in the first round. Conference champ Jordan-Matthews is matched against Salisbury High School, the champion of the Central Carolina Conference. The tie-breaker used was winning percentage which gave 19-1 Salisbury (.950) the home court advantage over 15-1 Jordan-Matthews (.938).

Number two seed Wheatmore (11-3) travels to Ashe County (15-3), the top seed from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A Conference.

First Round matches are scheduled for 4:00 pm Wednesday.

From the Mid-Piedmont Conference, top seeded Williams (14-1) will host South Iredell (14-2) while Eastern Guilford (13-3) will travel to Jesse Carson (12-2).

Regional seedings for Individual singles/doubles players will be announced either late today or on Tuesday.


October 16, 2017 – The Mid-Piedmont Conference has named two Asheboro coaches as 'Coach Of The Year' in their sports.

Jay Moore was honored as head coach of the Blue Comets tennis team which saw two players – Angie Pincus and Georgia Shipley - qualify for regional action later this week.

Karen Blanchard was named Coach of the Year in volleyball as the Blue Comets finished as Co-Champions in the MPC. Asheboro and Southern Alamance both finished with 10-2 conference records. The Patriots won the draw for top seed in the post-season tournament so Asheboro will host Eastern Guilford tonight at six o'clock as the number two seed.

October 15, 2017 – Cross Country teams from area schools will face off in their final Conference races Tuesday.

Wheatmore will host the Piedmont Athletic Conference meet while the Mid-Piedmont Conference teams will race at Hagan Stone Park near Southeast Guilford High School.

State playoffs in cross country include competition for teams and individual runners.

Each school may enter up to seven runners (7 men and 7 women) for the various regional competitions which will take place on Saturday, October 28th. A minimum of five runners is required to be considered a team for regional competition.

PAC 7 teams feed into the 2A Mid-East Regional at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary. Mid-Piedmont teams are in the 3A Mid-West Regional which will be held at McAlpine Park in Charlotte.

The top 25% of teams from each classification at each regional will advance to the State Championship Meet on Saturday, November 4th at the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville.

Along with the teams which qualify for the State Meet, the top ten runners from each regional who are not on a qualifying team will also advance for a chance at an individual championship.

Fayetteville Street Christian School defeated Southview Christian School today to win the Carolina Christian Conference Championship. The conference post-season tournament was held at Tabernacle Christian School in Monroe.

Brenna Bestmann of FSCS was name Tournament MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Madison Clark and Madison Vestal.


October 14, 2017 - The 81st Annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas will take place on Saturday, December 16th at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Asheboro head football coach Kevin Gillespie has been named as an assistant coach for the North Carolina team. Coach Gillespie was recognized Friday night before the Blue Comet's Homecoming Game against Southern Guilford.

This year's coaching staff will be lead by David Gentry of Murphy High School. Assistants include Gillespie, Tim Carson (Weddington), Thurman Leach (Garner Magnet School), Robert Priest (East Bladen), Ed Shepard (Eastern Guilford) and Joe White (South Mecklenburg).


October 14, 2017 - Women's Golf regionals are next week with local golfers playing in Goldsboro and Greensboro.

The 2A East Regional will be Monday at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course (white tees, apx 5500 yards) on South Slocumb Street in Goldsboro. All golfers will begin on hole #1.

Providence Grove golfers participating in the regional tournament are Maddie Hunt who tees off at 9:20 am and Allie Nelson who is scheduled for a 10:50 start.

The 3A Central Regional will be Monday at Greensboro National Golf Club (red tees, 5420 yards) on Niblick Drive in Summerfield.

Four Asheboro golfers will start on hole #10 at the following times: Riley Hammer at 9:50 am; Emma Haywood at 10:00 am; Sophia Morgan at 10:10 am and Olivia Elliot at 10:30 am.

Five golfers from Southwestern Randolph will also start on the 10th hole: Hailee Cagle at 10:20 am; Shelby Keye at 10:30 am; Madison McLeod at 10:40 am; Emma Freeman at 10:50 am and Emma Grubbs at 11:00 am.

October 8, 2017 – The final conference golf matches are scheduled for Monday, October 9.

Only Providence Grove and Trinity fielded women's golf teams (minimum 3 players) in the Piedmont Athletic Conference this season. Those teams will meet at the Colonial Country Club in Thomasville at 4 pm Monday.

Five schools fielded teams in the Mid-Piedmont Conference in 2017. Williams did not field a team but Bulldog Kayla Smith has been undefeated as an individual golfer through the season with an average score of 36 per nine hole match. The final conference match is scheduled for noon Monday at The Challenge course in Graham.

Qualifying teams as well as individual golfers from each conference will advance to regional competition next week.


October 7, 2017 -  Conference tennis tournaments are scheduled for Tuesday, October 10. The PAC 7 tournament will be held at Jordan-Matthews High School and the Mid-Piedmont tournament at Burlington Tennis Center.

Two teams from each conference will qualify for the state playoffs. There is also one 'wildcard' spot available in each classification (2A and 3A). Team playoffs begin on Wednesday, October 18.

The conference tournaments will also help determine the individual players who will qualify for regional tournaments which will be held on Friday and Saturday, October 20-21. Players from the PAC 7 Conference will advance to the 2A Mideast Regional at Herman Park in Goldsboro. Individual players from the Mid-Piedmont tournament advance to the 3A Midwest Regional at Les Myers Park in Concord.

October 1, 2017 - Congratulations to senior volleyballer Krista Tuggle of Wheatmore High School who set a new state record last week with her 3,297th career assist. With five games left in the regular season, Tuggle passed Providence Grove graduate Lia Johnson for the new record.

Johnson (PGHS '12) still holds the single season assist record of 1,311.
