September 8, 2020 – NCHSAA GUIDELINE UPDATE

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association announced updated guidelines today for athletic workouts. The main change brings the NCHSAA limit on gatherings in line with the state-wide limits which went into effect over the weekend allowing 25 people indoors and 50 people in outdoor venues. Commissioner Que Tucker noted in her email that schools should follow local regulations if those are more restrictive.

She also announced that the NCHSAA Board of Directors had approved changes to the 2020-21 sports schedule which include:

Increased swimming, cross country and track & field meets to 14 events during the regular season.

Moved the Cheerleading Invitational to May 22

All sports are limited to ONE scrimmage with a two hour limit

For individual sports (golf, tennis, etc), a conference tournament must be included as one of the total events scheduled for the season

For team sports, a conference tournament must be included in the total events scheduled for the season but the two teams who advance to the finals are allowed an extra contest

State Playoffs for this year will include 32-team brackets in all sports with football subdivided into two 16-team brackets for each classification. This year's playoffs will also use predetermined brackets rather than the usual 'seeding' process.

There are other sport-specific guidelines involving the number of teams allowed at one event, the number of alternates allowed at any event, athletic 'dead periods' and more in the Modified Sports Regulations available here: MODIFIED SPORTS REGULATIONS

Here is the updated Sports Calendar with playoff dates added: AMENDED SPORTS CALENDAR

Nick Coe (AHS '16) has been signed to the Miami Dolphin's practice squad.

Coe went undrafted during the NFL draft in April but signed with the New England Patriots a few days later. He was released during a series of Patriot roster moves in August which led to a tryout with the Dolphins and his reported signing with Miami earlier today.

The NFL increased the size of each team's practice squad to 16 players for the 2020 season due to the CoVID-19 pandemic. The practice squad is primarily used for skill development of inexperienced players.
