From AHS: Salem Lee from Asheboro was the medalist shooting a 35. Salem led the comets to a team victory while Addison Allen shot a 53 and Morgan Coward shot a 55 to round out the blue comets scores.

The lady blue comets shot a 143 as a team, while Providence Grove came in second with a 151, and Eastern Randolph finished with a 185.

Carolina Wright from Providence Grove shot a 43 and came in second overall, while her teammate Morgan Heilig finished 3rd overall shooting a 48.

Eastern Randolph's Madison Canoy led the Wildcats with a 60, and Mackenzie Gee shot a 62.

CROSS COUNTRY

SW Randolph at Asheboro - COMPLETE RESULTS

The Asheboro Blue Comets won both men's and women non-conference cross country matches in a home meet on Tuesday. Southwestern Randolph Cougars finished second in both, with Eastern Randolph's sole runner placing first individually for the girls' team.

In the boys' race, Comet senior Seth Hydzik and Cougar junior Aiden Pritchard battled to the finish line, as Hydzik edged his opponent. A trio of AHS seniors, David Curtis, Hunter Wilson and Nicholas Garcia, were next across the line, with Cougars' Vince Ornelas and Reese Poe following in sixth and seventh places. Comet sophomore Ryland Auler completed the scoring for the Comets. Rounding out the top 10 Comets were freshman Jacob Leveille, sophomore John Hunsucker, junior Isaac Martinez, senior Will Kelley and junior Wes Redding. Completing the Cougar scoring were Sam Hanson (14th), and Bryce Brown (15th).

In the girls' meet, ERHS senior Brecken Snotherly outpaced all female runners with a time of 18 minutes. AHS runner Natalie Flores, finishing second, was the top scoring runner, followed by Cougar Sadie Mabe; Comet Liberty Adams; Cougars Autumn Jones and Jayden Alexander; Comets Carlisle Dozier, Emma Dobbins, Emma Redding and Samantha Kozlowski; and Cougar Jordan Cox.

The Comets travel to Oak Grove Sept. 13 for their conference opener.

Eastern Randolph 69, Asheboro 7

Ervodd Cassidy had four touchdown runs for the Wildcats including a 68-yarder in the first quarter. Stratton Barwick scored on a running play and completed touchdown passes to Nicah Taylor and Jake Fesmire.

More scoring came from Lucas Smith and Angel Hernandez on rushing scores, Hernandez from 69 yards out, and Taylor returned an interception 78 yards for a touchdown.

Asheboro's Michael Brady rushed for 49 yards and Josh Meadows carried for 16 while Hamza Khan completed 10 passes for 48 yards with 3 interceptions.

Khan connected with Tony McRae for a 10 yard touchdown pass. Markell Graham had 5 catches for 21 yards. Ben Luck added 1 catch for 15.

Trinity 45, Forbush 21

Dylan Hodges registered 75 yards rushing (TD), 109 yards receiving (2 TD) and 216 return yards (2 TD) for the Bulldogs. Dominic Payne was 4-for-5 passing for 126 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 154 yards with two touchdowns. Brandon Campbell added a touchdown for Trinity.

Daniel Torreblanca-Gonzalez and Javion Holmes were each in double-digits with tackles with Torreblanca-Gonzalez recording 13 (2 tfl) and a sack. Holmes had 11 tackles (1 tfl) and Xavier Horton had 3 tackles for loss among his 7 total tackles.

SW Randolph 49, South Stanly 13

Easton Clapp passed for 87 yards three touchdowns and rushed for 177 yards and two more to lead the Cougar offense.

Adam Cole had 177 yards of offense and caught two of the scoring throws, rushed for a third and returned a punt for a fourth touchdown.

Clapp also connected with Sean Adkins for a touchdown.

Central Davidson 46, Randleman 21

Central Davidson stayed on the ground but churned out 490 yards of rushing offense. The Tigers finished with 300 yards – 201 passing and 99 yards rushing.

Randleman tied the game at 7-7 on a 12 yard rushing score by Amarion Moton in the first quarter. Christian Long was 13-for-21 passing with a touchdown and an interception. The score was a 20 yard catch in the third quarter by Tyshaun Goldston which was followed up with a 2-point run by Chesney Welch.

Providence Grove 42, Southern Guilford 0

With six take-a-ways and a short field, the Patriots still managed to top the hundred yard mark both rushing and passing the ball. Chase Whitaker recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass. Brady Collins returned an interception to the Southern Guilford three yard line. Parker Hall had a fumble recovery and there were interceptions made by Zach Lohr and Karson Bowman.

Andrew Canter completed 9 passes for 141 yards with touchdown tosses to Lemuel Coltrane and J C Cruz. Zane Cheek rushed for 62 yards and 2 touchdowns. Zander Cheek had 49 yards and a score. Chase Whitaker had 1 carry for 3 yards and a touchdown.

From AHS: The Blue Comets made it 4 straight wins to open the season with a victory against the defending 3A State Champions. Goals were scored by Cristian Ortiz (3) and Edwin Perez. Assists came from Cristian Cruz, Calvin Smith, Diego Bustamonte and Daniel Gutierrez.

Asheboro was able to keep it scoreless with outstanding defensive play from Diego Gutierrez and goalie David Agudelo!

From SWR: After evenly splitting the singles matches in their first conference match-up of the season, it all came down to doubles as the deciding factor and the Lady Cougar netters took the advantage winning 2 of 3 matches for the win.

From WHS: Zach Hazelwood set a personal record (PR) and finished third overall, only a few seconds behind the first place runner, earning a medal.

Though our boys finished 5th out of five scoring teams and the girls finished 4th out of four scoring teams, we are glad to have enough runners to score and are looking forward to continuing to improve and competing with PAC-7 teams.

FOOTBALL

Trinity 52, Chatham Central 0

Trinity had 368 yards of offense led by Dominic Payne's 91 rushing yards and 115 passing yards. Payne ran for one touchdown and threw for three more.

Bo Gibson (82 rushing yards) and Dylan Hodges (69 rushing yards) and Chance Grogan all had touchdown carries for the Bulldogs. Grogan was also 6-for-6 in pat kicks.

Brandon Campbell and Xavier Horton caught scoring passes.

West Davidson 27, Wheatmore 21

Jon Kelly had 16 rushes for 135 yards and two Warrior touchdowns. Danny Craig, Jr caught a scoring pass from Riley Strickland for another. Strickland completed 14 passes for 171 yards but threw three interceptions.

Andrew Morris recorded 8 tackles. Ethan Roberts and Ashtin Bennett had 7 tackles each with Roberts picking off a West Davidson pass.

Providence Grove 31, East Davidson 14

The Patriots rushed for 137 yards (two touchdowns) and passed for 165 yards (two touchdowns) in the win. Tucker Batten was 4-for-4 on pat kicks and connected on a 31 yard field goal.

Andrew Cantor was 9-for-14 passing with an interception and the two touchdown passes to Zander Cheek (4 catches, 100 yards) and Chase Whitaker (1 catch, 34 yards).

Zane Cheek carried for 63 yards and a score and Zander Cheek ran for 62 yards in the rushing attack. Whitaker added a rushing touchdown.

Leading tacklers were Karson Bowman and Whitaker with an interception by Zane Cheek.

Eastern Alamance 42, Eastern Randolph 28

Stratton Barwick completed 17 passes for 274 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Nicah Taylor had 136 receiving yards on six catches with both touchdowns. DJ Thomas had four catches for 76 yards.

Eastern Randolph had 93 rushing yards led by DeVonte Brooks with 7 carries for 30 yards.

Randleman 24, Asheboro 0

The Tigers rushed for 191 yards and three touchdowns by Christian Long, Amarion Moton and Micah Thurston in Randleman's first ever shut-out football win over Asheboro. Tyshaun Goldston caught four passes for 55 yards and Christian McCloud was 3-for-3 on pat kicks with a 25-yard field goal make for the Tigers.

Valentino Mark had 43 rushing yards for Asheboro while Hakeeme Butler led with 16 receiving yards. Quarterback Hamza Khan completed 10 of 20 passes for 47 yards.

SW Randolph 62, Jordan-Matthews 6

The Cougars scored on every possession against a young Jets team except their last when backup quarterback Ty Dixon ran out the clock with a series of kneel-downs.

In the first half, Adam Cole rushed for 116 yards and 2 touchdowns; Easton Clapp ran for 96 yards and 2 touchdowns; and Colton Law carried once for a touchdown. Cole and Eli Gravely caught touchdown passes from Clapp who was 8-for-14 for 124 yards and the 2 scores. Carson Norris returned a Jets fumble 18 yards for a touchdown late in the first quarter.

Asher Perkins was 8-for-9 on pat kicks, his lone miss came after his 40-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter. The nine touchdowns and 62 points in the game are the most ever by a Cougars football team.

From AHS: This afternoon the lady blue comets hosted the first ever Blue Comet Invitational at Pinewood Country Club. PCC was very gracious in letting us host this tournament to bring in some of the most talented girl golfers in the state of North Carolina to play 18 holes. Many of these girls are already committed to play golf at schools like Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, and  High Point University.

Asheboro senior Salem Lee finished the day shooting a 76, finishing 8th overall. While senior Morgan Coward posted a 115 and junior Addison Allen posted a 112 for the day. The blue comets finished 6th out of 7 schools represented.

The Cougars head to Chapel Hill Friday for their first game of the Wildcat Invitational Tournament against Western Guilford at 5pm. We will also face Carrboro and East Chapel Hill on Saturday before playing an unknown opponent in the last game.

Asheboro High School is not requiring masks at indoor events.

*According to the Asheboro High School website, the following protocols are in effect for indoor sports.

1. Players actively in the game are not required to wear masks.
2. Athletes and other participants on the team bench are encouraged to wear a mask and sit 3 feet from each other to maintain social distancing.
3. Coaches are not required to wear masks, but it is recommended.
4. Spectators are required to wear a mask.


August 9, 2022 – Fall Sports

High school sports begin competitions next week in North Carolina. In Asheboro and Randolph County, public schools will see competition begin Monday in men's soccer, women's tennis and volleyball.

SportsTone has not yet received every schedule for the upcoming season but the first cross country meets that SportsTone is aware of will take place Tuesday.

All seven football teams will begin play next Friday, August 19 and women's golf matches will start the following week.

Schedules for each of those sports will be available at SportsTone later this week.

Brent Gibbs of Camden was named the MVP of the Southeast Regional Tournament.

SC Post 17 will play the Western Regional Champion at 4:00 Thursday on the opening day of the ALWS.

The 2022 American Legion Southeast Regional Tournament begins Wednesday at McCrary Park. Teams will arrive in Asheboro today with a Welcome and Orientation Session scheduled for players and coaches this evening.

The game schedule calls for four games Wednesday and Thursday, three games Friday, two on Saturday and championship Sunday will feature one or two games.
