December 18, 2020 – STATE PLAYOFFS

The NCHSAA has announced the playoff format for volleyball and the seeding guidelines for most sports that will be used during the current school year.

The breakdown for local conferences in volleyball includes Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference teams playing in the East Region with the top two teams in as automatic qualifiers. There will also be four Wild Card spots available in the east. Those spots will go to remaining teams with the best winning percentage in conference matches.

Teams in the Piedmont Athletic 2A Conference will also be playing in the East Region. The PAC-7 will receive two automatic berths and there will be three Wild Card spots available for east regional teams with the best conference winning percentage.

The Yadkin Valley 1A Conference will get three automatic berths into the West Region bracket. There will be two slots available for Wild Card teams in that region, also based solely on conference winning percentage.

Along with volleyball, other sports including football, basketball, soccer, softball and baseball will be using similar brackets although football will be sub-divided following the spring season. Conferences have been divided into east and west regions and each region will have 16 teams in the playoffs which is half the number of recent years and will shorten the playoffs by one round.

Playoff seeding will take place after the qualifiers for each region have been determined. Conference champions will be drawn randomly to determine the highest seeds. Second place finishers will then be drawn for the next positions followed by a drawing of third place qualifiers and wild card teams grouped together for the final spots in each bracket.

If possible, competition between conference opponents in the first round will be avoided, according to the NCHSAA.

You can see the volleyball playoff bracketing process HERE. The brackets for other team sports using this process will be similar although the number of automatic berths from each conference may vary from sport-to-sport as that number will be determined by the number of teams participating in each sport and not the total number of schools in the conference.

December 5, 2020 – SCHOOL RE-ALIGNMENT PROCESS

The NCHSAA has released the first step in the re-alignment of member schools. The next alignment period will begin with the 2021-22 school year and last through spring of 2025.

This re-classification of schools begins by dividing the state into east and west regions then dividing the schools in each region into the familiar 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A classifications. In addition to each school's yearly enrollment (ADM), the division into classifications will also take into account State Cup Points (indicating how well a school's entire athletic program does in postseason play) and Identified Student Percentage (ISP) which is “the number of students in each school who are on some form of government assistance per USDA guidelines.”

Randolph County is in the West Region and will see two classification changes:

Eastern Randolph High School – currently 2A; will change to the 1A classification

Southwestern Randolph High School – currently 3A; will change to the 2A classification

The other six public schools will remain in their present classifications.

Here are where current conference members should end up:

MID-PIEDMONT 3A

Southwestern Randolph 2A (West)

Asheboro 3A (West)
Eastern Guilford 3A (West)
Southern Guilford 3A (West)
Williams 3A (East)
Southeast Guilford 4A (West)
Southern Alamance 4A (East)

PIEDMONT ATHLETIC 2A

Eastern Randolph 1A (West)

Providence Grove 2A (West)
Jordan-Matthews 2A (East)
Randleman 2A (West)
T W Andrews 2A (West)
Trinity 2A (West)
Wheatmore 2A (West)

YADKIN VALLEY 1A

Albemarle 1A (West)

Chatham Central 1A (East)
Gray Stone Day 1A (West)
North Moore 1A (East)
North Rowan 1A (West)
North Stanly 2A (West)
South Davidson 1A (West)
South Stanly 1A (West)
Uwharrie Charter 1A (West)

The process will continue with an initial proposal for conference re-alignment expected next week followed by feedback and revisions until the final version is decided in March, 2021.

December 4, 2020 – NCHSAA WINTER MEETING

Following the conclusion of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association winter meeting, Board of Directors President Jerry Simmons, Principal of New Bern High School, and NCHSAA Commissioner Que Tucker took part in a virtual press conference Thursday afternoon.

Among the decisions made by the NCHSAA Board of Directors and answers to questions during the press conference:

LOST REVENUE: The allocation of $4,000,000 for distribution to member schools to help cover costs of operating athletic programs with limited ticket sales.

OFFICIALS: Whistle shields being used by volleyball officials will be used by all officials in football, soccer, swimming, basketball and lacrosse.

BASKETBALL: The addition of one 60 second official time out in basketball during each quarter to help players and officials adjust to wearing masks.

GUIDELINES: Updated the 2020-2021 Modified Sports Manual for Basketball, Football, Lacrosse, Soccer and Swimming & Diving.

FOOTBALL: An adjustment to football practice guidelines for this year for players participating in other sports.

HEALTH & SAFETY: Approved virtual concussion monitoring for athletes going through concussion protocols.

PLAYOFFS: Playoff brackets will be released soon.

ELIGIBILITY: There were no changes made to academic eligibility requirements for the 2021 spring semester.

SPORTS CALENDAR: There were no changes made to the adjusted 2020-21 athletic calendar which is currently being used.

Simmons stated that although the NCDHHS had recommended against high-contact sports like football, basketball and lacrosse, the board felt that the safety protocols put forth by the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee along with information learned from other levels of competition will allow those sports to proceed even with rising infection numbers in the general population.

Tucker added that while the season begins with try-outs and practices, contests will not begin until January.

According to Simmons, while there have been volleyball teams in quarantine, most cases have been individuals who contracted or were in contact with CoVID outside team activities.

CHAMPIONSHIPS: Locations for regional and state championship contests have not been determined because venues traditionally used for those contests do not yet know if they will be available this far in advance.

RE-ALIGNMENT: The first re-alignment proposal is scheduled to be released on Thursday, December 10. The data and equations used to determine the proposal will also be available on the NCHSAA website.

FUTURE FOOTBALL: Removed one football contest for a total of 10 regular season games beginning in August, 2021.

According to Simmons, this was done for health and safety reasons and to bring the NC schedule in line with most other states. Tucker added that this discussion had been taking place for several years and was not CoVID-related.

Eliminated the subdivisions for football playoffs beginning in August, 2021.

Tucker stated that the original request for subdividing football had been for the 1A classification with student enrollment (ADM) as the only metric for determining school classification. During the current re-alignment process, other factors have been added which, along with the opening of new schools over the years, should increase fairness in on-the-field competition and allow a return to one state champion in each of the four classifications.

64 teams will still qualify for the state playoffs in each classification.

Simmons also stated that the NCHSAA would have 426 member schools when the 2021-22 school year begins.

Next week will see the beginning of swimming competitions along with the start of basketball practices.
