3A Mid-West at Salisbury Community Park

From AHS: Eight members of the cross country team represented Asheboro High School Saturday in the 3A regionals at Salisbury Community Park. 

Sophomore Seth Hydzik was the first Comet finisher with a time of 20:13, followed by senior Brandon Aguilar with a time of 20:46.Other AHS runners were Luis Martinez, Hunter Wilson, Josué Escalaté.and Nelson Goad.

The Comet girls were led by sophomore Sophia Roman (22.54) and freshman Malaika Khan (23:45).

2A Mid-West at Fisher River Park

From WHS: Wheatmore traveled to Fisher River Park in Dobson for the 2A Midwest Regional on Saturday.  Both our boys' and girls' teams placed 9th in the region.

Personal records were set by Brianna Hill, Allison Hill, Mattie Foshie, Emily Cribbs, Zach Hazelwood, Hayden Yates, Christian HIldreth, Chase St. Clair, and Jonathan Heraldo.

Zach Hazelwood qualified as an individual to go to the state meet next Saturday and earned his place as the third fastest boy in Wheatmore's school history.
This was the final meet for graduating seniors Hayden Yates, Jimmy Smith, Chase St. Clair, and Juan Morales.

Five teams from Randolph County have qualified for the 2021 playoffs in men's soccer. Four of those teams will open the state tournament at home with the first round scheduled for Monday.

Asheboro (#4 seed, 3A), Uwharrie Charter (#6, 1A), Trinity (#9, 2A) and Eastern Randolph (#12, 1A) will play at home in the first round. Wheatmore (#28, 2A) has a road game at North Forsyth.

Dominick Poole (RHS '20) has been named to the official Watch List for the 2021 Jerry Rice Award which is presented annually to the national Freshman of the Year in the FCS Division I subdivision.

A redshirt freshman at The Citadel, Poole is among the leaders in the Southern Conference as a pass defender and among his team leaders in tackles.

WOMEN'S GOLF – STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS (DAY 2)

3A Championship at Foxfire Resort

Asheboro's Salem Lee finished 5th with a two day total of 164 (+20). This was Salem's third appearance in the championship tournament where she finished in a 48th place tie as a freshman and tied for 18th as a sophomore last year.

1A/2A Championship at Longleaf Golf Club

Caroline Wright, a junior at Providence Grove broke into the top ten in her third appearance in the state championship tournament with a 167 score (+23) which was good for 9th place. Caroline finished in a tie for 16th as a freshman and in a 32nd place tie last year.

Making their first appearances in the state finals were Randleman junior Paulina Palmer, PG sophomore Morgan Heilig and seniors Lexi Auman and Lindsey Auman from Southwestern Randolph.

October 25, 2021 – WOMEN'S TENNIS

Wheatmore senior Kara Comer has qualified for the state championship tournament in women's tennis for a third time. She was the lone representative from the PAC 7 to advance out of the regional tournaments over the weekend.

As a sophomore Comer qualified as a singles player following the 2019 season. Due to COVID, the 2020 season was played this past spring and saw Kara and sister Taylor Comer advance to the state quarterfinals in the doubles tournament in June.

The 2021 State Championships will take place this Friday and Saturday with the 2A tournament held at Ting Park in Holly Springs.

Wheatmore tennis is still active in the team tournament with a second round match at Hendersonville on Tuesday.


October 25, 2021 – SCHEDULE CHANGES

Due to the forecast of stormy weather this evening and again Thursday night and Friday, a number of changes have already been made to this week's varsity schedules.

One change for later in the week involves the first ever meeting in football between Asheboro and Montgomery Central.

The varsity football game has been moved up to Wednesday night - 7:00 kickoff - at Montgomery Central High School in Troy with the JV football game rescheduled for 6:30 Tuesday at Asheboro.

Fans should also note that MCHS is NOT selling tickets at the gate this season. Tickets must be purchased online at the following link: https://www.montgomery.k12.nc.us/domain/2396

The school also wants you to know that only clear bags are allowed into the game and that this is a "Pink Out" game in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Lauren LaPlant (SWR '16) has signed with professional women's basketball team IT Carlow in Carlow, Ireland.

During her time at Western Carolina University, LaPlant established a new record for most three-pointers made in a season and is top five in career makes from beyond the arc. She joins a team which is a member of the Irish Super League (formerly the Irish Premier League) which consists of 10 teams in the Republic of Ireland.

PG: Luke Thomas completed 11 passes for 211 yards along with 36 rushing yards and a touchdown. Caleb Rogers had 24 carries for 115 yards and a touchdown and six catches for 115 yards receiving. Zane Cheek rushed for 54 yards and Chase Whitaker had four carries with four touchdowns.

SWR: Easton Clapp had 14 carries for 114 rushing yards with two touchdowns. Keaton Reed had 71 yards on 19 carries with a touchdown and passed for 90 yards including a touchdown pass to Bryson Reid. Adam Cole returned a kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown.

CROSS COUNTRY – CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

MPC Championships at Denton Farm Park

From AHS: Four runners from Asheboro High School's cross country team earned all-conference honors and top-ten finishes in Thursday's Mid Piedmont Conference championship at Denton Farm Park. The Comets are the county's only 3A team.

In the boys' race, sophomore Seth Hydzik was seventh overall while senior Brandon Aguilar was 10th. All-conference runners received T-shirts from Albemarle's Vac 'n' Dash running store for their wins. Other varsity runners for the Comets were Luis Martinez, Josué Escalante, Nelson Goad, Hunter Wilson and Adam Goodman. Isaac Martinez was first Comet finisher in the JV race.

In the girls' race, sophomore Sophia Roman was the top AHS finisher and fifth overall; freshman Malaika Kahn was ninth. Other varsity runners were Carlisle Dozier, Emma Redding and Liberty Adams.

Central Davidson High School took top spots in both team finishes, followed by Oak Grove High School.

Opening at home are 2A teams from Southwestern Randolph (#2) and Randleman (#13) and 1A Uwharrie Charter (#3). Also included in the preliminary 2A bracket are Providence Grove (#24), Wheatmore (#25) and Trinity (#26).

From the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference are Central Davidson (#5), Oak Grove (#16), Ledford (#23) and North Davidson (#29).

Schedules are set for post-season volleyball tournaments in the Mid-Piedmont 3A and Piedmont Athletic 1A/2A Conferences. Both tournaments begin Monday with the top seed in the PAC (SW Randolph) and the top two seeds in the MPC (Central Davidson and Oak Grove) receiving 'byes' into the second round.

SWR: Keaton Reed passed for 89 yards and two touchdowns to Adam Cole including a pass to Bryson Reid and lateral to Cole. Easton Clapp rushed for 153 yards and two scores.

RHS: Micah Thurston and Christian Long had touchdown runs and Evrodd Cassady had 108 yards rushing on 28 attempts. Chris Gentry made field goals of 36, 38 and 39 yards.


October 15, 2021 – WOMEN'S GOLF

Randolph County will be represented by eight student-athletes in the 2021 Regional Tournaments in Women's Golf. The 1-day, 18 hole regionals for local players will be held on Tuesday.

Salem Lee and Addison Allen from Asheboro High School will compete in the 3A Central Regional at Greensboro National Golf Club.

The combined 1A/2A Central Regional will be played at Monroe Country Club and feature Paulina Palmer from Randleman, Providence Grove's Caroline Wright and Morgan Heilig and Lexi Auman, Lindsey Auman and Caiden McDuffie from Southwestern Randolph.

October 13, 2021 – COLLEGE COMMITTMENT

Wheatmore senior Robert Hales signed his National Letter of Intent yesterday to continue his academic and baseball career at St Andrews University. Hales has been a varsity performer since his freshman season as an outfielder and pitcher.

St Andrews University is located in Laurinburg where the baseball Knights compete in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.

From AHS: The Asheboro Boys XC team won the meet at N. Davidson; the Asheboro top runners were: Brandon Aguilar, Luis Martinez, and Isaac Martinez.

Due to tennis and injuries, the Asheboro girls team did not have enough runners to score, but Sophia Roman was the first Asheboro girl and the 3rd overall; Carlisle Dozier finished the meet in 8th overall (in under 30 minutes) BAREFOOT after the first mile due to blisters!

From AHS: Congratulations to Salem Lee for winning the MPC Conference Tournament today at Winding Creek Golf Club, with a score of 77. Salem was also named Mid Piedmont 3A Player of the Year and also made the MPC All Conference Team. Emma Dobbins also made the MPC All Conference Team for Asheboro as well.

The Lady Blue Comet golfers captured second place overall in the Conference Tournament today. 
Salem Lee and Addison Allen will continue to represent the lady blue comets at Regionals at Greensboro National next week.
