From PG: The Women's XC team placed 4th in the regionals and advancied to the State Championship next Satruday.

The Boys XC placed 5th and did not qualify for states as a team but performed very well. Congrats to Robert Burton for qualifying for states as an individual and also for setting a new school record.

From WHS:Wheatmore girls placed 6th in the region while boys placed 12th. 

Zach Hazelwood qualified for the state meet with his time of 17:02.86 which is the 2nd fastest time in WHS history and earned him all-region recognition with a third place finish in the meet.

From UCA: Our ladies cross county team had a strong showing placing 5th in regionals, one point away from qualifying for states. Jazmine Palma qualified for states individually and will run next Saturday! Congratulations to Jazmine and Coach Smith!

SW Randolph 50, Trinity 12

Easton Clapp rushed for four touchdowns and passed for two more in the Cougars' win. A 32 yard pass to Sean Adkins put Southwestern Randolph in front first followed by a 6 yard run by Clapp and a 24 yard run by Colton Law.

Trinity's Tait Conti put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a 5 yard touchdown run early in the second quarter but Clapp rushed for another score to keep the Cougars well in front 28-6.

Before the half ended, Conti connected with Chance Grogan for a 78 yard Trinity touchdown but Clapp answered again with a 19 yard run and a 36-12 Cougar lead at the half.

Eli Gravely had a touchdown catch and Clapp a short run for the only scores in the second half.

Montgomery Central 45, Asheboro 22

The Blue Comets defense scored twice but couldn't keep up with the visitors from Montgomery Central. Hakemme Butler intercepted a second quarter pass and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown and Eduardo Soto's kick cut the Timberwolves' lead in half at 14-7.

In the third quarter, Kai Matthews scooped up a fumble at the Central 43 yard line and scored to get Asheboro within 28-14.

Asheboro's offense scored in the fourth quarter when Hamza Khan completed a 30 yard touchdown pass to Jaylon Moore. The conversion pass from Khan to Lleyton Coberley made the score 38-22 in favor of Montgomery Central but the Timberwolves returned the ensuing kick-off for the final score of the game.

Eastern Randolph 28, Randleman 13

Devonte Brooks rushed for two touchdowns, Stratton Barwick connected with Adonye Herbert for a 12 yard scoring pass and Evrodd Cassidy returned an interception 45 yards for a score as the Wildcats won the Piedmont Athletic Conference football title for the second straight year.

Barwick completed eight passes for 128 yards with Nicah Taylor receiving four passes for 83 yards.

On the ground, Cassidy had 12 carries for 54 yards, Brooks had 14 carries for 64 yards and Lucas Smith rushed 7 times for 36 yards.

Christian Long was 8-for-19 passing for 137 yards including a 38 yard touchdown to Aiden Robinson for the Tigers. Tyshaun Goldston had four catches for 62 yards while Amarion Moton had 47 yards rushing. Goldston returned a punt 43 yards for a touchdown.

Eastern Randolph intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble for three Randleman turnovers.

ER & PG golfers in 1A/2A CHAMPIONSHIP at Foxfire Resort

AHS golfers in 3A CHAMPIONSHIP at Longleaf Golf Club

Local golfers Caroline Wright (Providence Grove) and Salem Lee (Asheboro) finished their high school golfing careers in the 2022 State Championship tournaments. It was the fourth championship appearance for each golfer with both finishing in the top 10 in North Carolina in each of the last two years.

As a 2A competitor, Wright had finishes of 16th (2019), 32nd (2020), 9th (2021) and 4th (2022) while Lee placed 48th (2019), 18th (2020) and 5th (2021 and 2022) in 3A golf.

Trinity senior Autumn Gentry has qualified for the state championship tournament in women's tennis. She is the lone representative from the PAC 7 to advance out of the regional tournaments over the weekend.

Gentry is a multiple All-Conference performer in the Piedmont Athletic Conference and has multiple appearances in regional tournaments. She will be making her first appearance in the State 2A Championship Tournament when it begins Friday at Ting Park in Holly Springs.

October 20, 2022 – VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS

All seven members of the 1A/2A Piedmont Athletic Conference (PAC 7) garnered spots in the upcoming volleyball state playoffs. In the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference, Asheboro was the first team out in 3A volleyball, just missing out on this year's playoffs.

PAC 7 Champion Southwestern Randolph, the defending State Champions in 2A volleyball, is seeded #2 in the west region, just as the Cougars were last year, and will host #31 seed Surry Central in the first round.

Randleman finished second in the conference and will host Bandys High School in a match between the #13 and #20 seeds.

As the top 1A finisher in the conference, Uwharrie Charter Academy received a #5 seed in the 1A west region and will host #28 Eastern Randolph in a cross-county, intra-conference match-up.

Also hitting the road for the first round will be #18 Providence Grove at #15 East Davidson, #29 Wheatmore will play at #4 East Surry and #32 Trinity plays at #1 McMichael High School.

The volleyball playoffs begin Saturday.

PAC Golfers in 1A/2A Regional at Stonebridge GC- STATE QUALIFIERS

Golfers from Providence Grove and Eastern Randolph qualified for the State Championship Match with their efforts in the regional tournament. PG's Caroline Wright shot a 75 to win the regional by 5 strokes and lead the Patriots to a first place team win along with Morgan Heilig and Anna Holloway.

Wildcat golfers Mackenzie Gee and Madison Canoy also advanced to the 2-day state championship at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club in Jackson Springs. The event will be on the 'Red' course and run Monday and Tuesday, October 24-25.

Asheboro in 3A Regional at Whispering Pines - COMPLETE RESULTS

From AHS: Asheboro High School's girls golf team captured second place at the 3A Central Regional Tournament at Whispering Pines River Course. Salem Lee led the lady blue comets with a 76, and also finished in second place. Morgan Coward finished with a 109, and Addison Allen finished with a 110. 

With the second place team finish the team punched their ticket into the 3A State Championship Tournament held at Longleaf Golf & Family Club in Southern Pines on Monday Oct. 24th, and Tuesday Oct. 25th.

Three teams from the Piedmont Athletic Conference have qualified for the team playoffs in women's tennis. Automatic bids went to the top team in both 1A and 2A classifications with conference champion Wheatmore in the 2A West Region and Uwharrie Charter Academy in the 1A West Region.

Second place finisher Southwestern Randolph also qualified for the 2A playoffs.

All three teams will begin the playoffs on the road as #9 seeded Wheatmore travels to #8 Shelby, #15 SW Randolph plays at #2 Lincoln Charter and #16 Uwharrie Charter travels to #1 seed Mount Airy.

Asheboro finished in a tie with Ledford for second place in the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference but the Panthers got the playoff bid over the Blue Comets. Ledford received the 14th seed in the region and will play at the #3 seed – and MPC Champion – Montgomery Central.

Round 1 of the team playoffs is scheduled for Wednesday.

Individual regional tournaments will take place Friday and Saturday.

October 16, 2022 – FALL SPORTS

Women's Golf is the first of the fall sports to begin state playoff action with regional tournaments scheduled for Monday and Tuesday around North Carolina.

The 3A Central Region will be held Monday at Whispering Pines Country Club. Mid-Piedmont Conference Champion Salem Lee and Asheboro High School teammate Morgan Coward, both seniors, along with junior Addison Allen will compete in the regional.

The 1A/2A Central Region tournament will be Tuesday at Stonebridge Golf Club near Monroe. Eastern Randolph seniors Mackenzie Gee and Madison Canoy have qualified for the regional along with three Providence Grove players: senior, and Piedmont Athletic Conference Champion, Caroline Wright, junior Morgan Heilig and sophomore Anna Holloway.

SPORTSTONE WOMEN'S GOLF

The 2022 Women's Tennis Dual Team Tournament will be seeded late Monday or early Tuesday with first round matches scheduled for Wednesday.

Individual tennis regionals will take place this Friday and Saturday.

Volleyball conference tournaments begin Monday in both the PAC and MPC. First round matches will be at higher seeds with the top seed in the Piedmont Athletic Conference (SW Randolph) and the top two seeds in the Mid-Piedmont Conference (Oak Grove and Ledford) receiving byes into Tuesday semi-final matches.

Seeding for the state tournament will be Thursday with first round matches this Saturday, October 22.

SPORTSTONE VOLLEYBALL

The Mid-Piedmont Conference Cross Country Championships will be held Monday at Denton Farm Park. The Piedmont Athletic Conference Championships will take place Wednesday at Wheatmore.

Wheatmore 27, Trinity 26

Trailing by two scores in the second half, Wheatmore pulled to within 26-21 in the final minute of the third quarter on a Trey Swaney run. Then, late in the fourth, the Warriors scored the go-ahead touchdown on a fourth down play from the Trinity 25 yard line.

For Trinity, Chance Grogan rushed for 154 yards and a touchdown, Tate Conti carried for a score and Dominic Payne connected with Jacob Hodges for two touchdowns in the passing game.

Eastern Randolph 28, Providence Grove 7

Devonte Brooks had 20 carries for 145 yards and three touchdowns for the Wildcats while Ervodd Cassidy rushed for 60 yards on nine carries and Stratton Barwick rushed six times for 15 yards.

Lucas Smith returned an interception 70 yards for an Eastern Randolph touchdown and Yane Jaimes was 4-for-4 on conversion kicks.

The Patriots scored on a 19 yard pass from Brady Collins to Lemuel Coltrane with Tucker Batten adding the extra point. Collins was 12-for-24 passing for 154 yards and the touchdown but with 5 interceptions. Zane Cheek led Providence Grove on the ground with 54 yards on 10 carries.

Randleman 34, SW Randolph 7

Amarion Moton carried for 132 of Randleman's 163 rushing yards and reached the end zone twice. Moton also caugh 2 passes for 55 yards while Tyshaun Goldston had 3 receptions for 66 yards and two touchdowns. The Tigers also got two field goals from Christian McLeod of 33 and 24 yards to go with his four extra point kicks. Christian Long completed 9 passes for 123 yards and two scores.

Goldston and Aiden Robinson recorded interceptions for the Tigers.

Easton Clapp had a rushing touchdown and passed for 143 yards for the Cougars. Adam Cole carried for 93 yards.

Mid-Piedmont Conference Championship at Holly Ridge

From AHS: The Lady Blue Comets competed in the 18 hole MPC Championship Tournament, held at Holly Ridge Golf Links with Salem Lee taking first place shooting a 73.

Addison Allen and Morgan Coward both shot a 105. Paylina Wilson shot a 127 to round out the team scores.

Salem Lee was named MPC Conference Player of the Year and was named All Conference. Addison Allen was also named to the all conference team. The Lady Blue Comets finished second as a team in the conference overall.

Salem, Addison, and Morgan will travel to Whispering Pines' River Course to compete in the 3A Central Regional Tournament on Monday Oct. 17th.

Stratton Barwick was 11-for-15 with touchdown passes to Jake Fesmire, DJ Thomas and AJ Randell. Devonte Brooks carried for 161 yards and 2 touchdowns. Ervodd Cassidy (70 yards), Angel Hernandez (54 yards) and Lucas Smith (3 yards) scored a touchdown apiece.

The Tiger's scoring started with a 28-yard field goal by Christian McLeod. Christian Long was 8-for-14 passing for 118 yards with Tyshaun Goldston grabbing 6 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown. Amarion Moton had 24 carries for 156 yards and 2 scores. Long added 12 carries for 51 yards.

Randleman intercepted 3 Patriots passes including one by Greg Price which he returned 44 yards for a Tigers touchdown.

Providence Grove had 131 yards passing from Andrew Canter and 26 yards from Brady Collins. James Ellis had a touchdown reception from Canter among his 57 receiving yards.

Adam Cole scored 5 touchdowns for the Cougars – 1 rushing, 3 receiving and 1 kick-off return – along with a 2-point conversion run in his 275 total yards of offense. The North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association has announced coaching honors for each of the state's eight regions. All schools in each geographic region are considered together, regardless of classification. Public schools in Randolph County are in Region 5.

The 2022 Coach of the Year is Jake Smith of Randleman High School.

The 2022 Assistant Coach of the Year is Randy Wallace of Southwestern Randolph High School.

The NCBCA also selects a high school baseball 'Field of the Year' in recognition of the people, time and effort involved in maintaining the facility. In Region 5, Southwestern Randolph's baseball field is the Field of the Year for 2022. Congratulations to Coaches Ethan Marsh, Matt Kiser and Ed Lagrama.

From SWR: After winning 4 of the 6 singles matches, the Cougars needed only one doubles match to secure the win. They were able to take 1 of the 3 doubles.

Singles match winners were Andee Bullard 10-4, Allie Popp 10-3, Sammie Parks 10-10 (7-3) and Lindsi Brown 10-8. The lone doubles win came from the duo of Bullard and Popp at the number 1 position with a final score of 8-5.

The win takes the Cougars to 9-5 overall with the final match of the season coming up on Wednesday at home versus Uwharrie Charter Academy.

From AHS: Salem Lee tied for first in today's final regular season match shooting a 38. Addison Allen and Morgan Coward each finished with a 49 which was the best rounds this season for both. Paylina Wilson finished with a 72.

The lady blue comets travel to Pinehurst on Wednesday to compete in the Pinecrest Invitational match that will be played at Pinehurst #6.
