10, 2025 – AMERICAN LEGION
BASEBALL
For the second straight year
the North
Carolina champion took on the Alabama champion for the championship of
the Southeast Regional Tournament. For the second
straight year that game needed more than seven innings.
Asheville, NC defeated Troy,
AL 7-6 in
8 innings for the 2025 title after Troy defeated Wayne County, NC last
summer 5-4 in 9 innings.
Asheville led from the
beginning after
Jordyn Brown (double), Kolt Nelson and Evan Connor (2-rbi single)
started the home half of the 1st with hits. Connor
later scored on a wild pitch for a 3-1 score after one inning.
A solo home run by Troy's
Cayden
Boutwell cut into the NC lead in the second and the Alabama champion
took the lead with four runs in the 3rd inning. Haze McCorkle drove
in Evan Taylor and Brady Richardson with a 1-out single to tie the
game. McCorkle later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jake Franklin and
Porter Dykes drove in Ethan Walls for a 5-3 Alabama lead.
Franklin drove in McCorkle
again in the
5th to give Alabama Post 70 a 6-3 lead over North Carolina Post 70.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Carson
Wallace drove in Conner to make the score 6-4.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Brown scored on a sac fly by Connor to make the score 6-5.
In the bottom of the
seventh, Reagan
Smith drove in Wallace to tie the score 6-6.
In the bottom of the eighth,
with two
outs, Micah Simpson drove in Brown for the 7-6 win and Asheville's
first Regional Championship.
Asheville's Kolt Nelson was
named the
MVP of the Southeast Regional. Nelson hit .500 (8-16) in the event
with two doubles, He drove in 6 runs and scored 6 runs.
Haze McCorkle led Troy
batters with two
hits, two rbi and two runs scored. Cayden Boutwell hit a solo home
run for the 9-time Alabama champions.
Jordyn Brown pitched the
eighth inning
for Asheville to earn the win. At the plate, Brown went 3-for-5 and
scored three runs. Evan Connor had two hits with three rbi and scored
twice.
The loss ended Troy's string
of three
straight regional titles and the trips to the American Legion World
Series those titles bring. Troy Post 70 was the defending National
Champion but will not get the chance to repeat. Troy also won the
national title in 2022.
Asheville's first North
Carolina
Championship was in 1929.
Of note, on Friday night,
Asheville and
Troy met in the regional tournament. Asheville remained undefeated
when Micah Simpson drove in Jordyn Brown in the bottom of the seventh
for the walk-off win.
The 2025 American Legion
World Series
begins Thursday morning at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, NC. Asheville is
scheduled for the final game of the day against Bossier City,

BASEBALL
The 2025 Southeast Regional
Tournament
begins Wednesday at McCrary Park in Asheboro with Randolph County
Post 45 serving as the host team for the twelfth time.
Among the returning teams is
the
defending national champion from Troy, Alabama. Troy advanced through
the Southeast Region and defeated Midland, Michigan for the 2024 AL
World Series title. It was the second championship for Troy, which also
won the 2022 title, and the third consecutive appearance in the ALWS.
Jacksonville, Florida
returns from last
year's field and Owensboro, Kentucky - which made the trip to
Asheboro in 2022 and 2023 – is back after being a part of the Great
Lakes Region last year. With Georgia not sending a team this year,
South Carolina will have two representatives in the event. First-time
State Champion Richland Post 215 will make their regional debut while
the runner-up team from Florence will be back after a one year
absence.
It's been a longer wait for
Asheville,
North Carolina to return to regional play. Asheville won the 1929
North Carolina championship which, according to information at the
American Legion website, would have sent them to East Regional action
in a single-elimination tournament format.
Those teams along with the
Puerto Rico
Champion and the Post 45 host team will be in action at McCrary Park
from Wednesday through Sunday. The Regional Champion will then head
to Shelby, NC for the American Legion World Series which starts on
Thursday, August 14.
