Asheboro High School held the Blue Comets annual signing ceremony for seniors continuing their educational and athletic careers beyond high school. The nine students taking part and their chosen colleges were:

May 18, 2024 – COLLEGE COMMITMENT

Wheatmore senior Alby Pulaski signed her Letter of Intent this week to continue her academic and athletic career at Guilford Technical Community College. A standout for Warriors volleyball, Pulaski will join the GTCC Titans competing in the NJCAA.

NCHSAA Championship events scheduled for today - 1A and 3A Track & Field at NC A & T State University and Dual Team Tennis at Burlington Tennis Center - have been postponed until Monday due to expected weather conditions.


May 17, 2024 – Friday Results

BASEBALL – PLAYOFFS (Round 4)

#2 Uwharrie Charter 4, #3 Christ the King 3 (8 innings)

Uwharrie Charter tied the game 3-3 with a run in the seventh but needed an extra inning to extend their winning streak to 18 games.

Jose Ramirez went 3-for-3 at the plate including the game-winning double which drove in Grat Dalton in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ramirez totaled 2 rbi and scored a run in the game.

Dalton had 2 hits including a double and an rbi. Carter Brown and Troy Carver both hit doubles.

Brett Smith pitched six innings giving up 3 (earned) runs on 8 hits with 4 strikeouts. Logun Wilkins got the win allowing 1 hit and 2 walks with 1 strikeout in two innings of relief.

SOFTBALL – PLAYOFFS (Round 4)

#4 Robbinsville 4, #1 Uwharrie Charter 3

Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Eagles' comeback effort ended one run short against the Smoky Mountain Conference Champions.

Jayla Hirley (triple, 2 rbi, run) and Gracie Smith (run) had 2 hits each. Ansley Wright (run), Riley Thompson and Katelyn West also had hits.

Mollie Bulla suffered her first loss of the season giving up 4 runs on 3 hits – two of them were home runs – with 8 walks and 10 strikeouts.

#4 SW Randolph 1, #1 West Wilkes 0

The Cougar's only hit and only base runner came when Madelyn Smith tripled past a diving left fielder to lead off the top of the seventh inning. That set up a fly ball to center by Alyssa Harris which drove in Smith for the only run of the game and send Southwestern Randolph to the regional finals for the first time since 2010.

Macie Crutchfield earned the shutout win giving up 2 hits with 4 walks and 2 hit batters. Crutchfield struck out 11 as the Cougar defense stranded all 8 West Wilkes runners on the base paths.

SOFTBALL – PLAYOFFS (Round 3)

#4 SW Randolph 3, #5 Owen 0

SWR: Macie Crutchfield struck out 11 batters in the win while giving up 3 hits and 1 walk. Madelyn Smith (rbi, run), Kami Dunn (double, run) and Alyssa Harris (rbi, run) had 1 hit each. Crutchfield also had an rbi.

WOMEN'S SOCCER - PLAYOFFS (Round 2)

#5 Hickory 7, #12 Asheboro 0

#3 Uwharrie Charter 3, #14 Cornerstone Charter 1

UCA: Goals by Jazmin Palma, Reese Craven and Lily Charlesworth. Assist by Palma. Alexis Marion had 12 saves.

#4 West Davidson 1, #13 Providence Grove 1 (WD wins in SO 4-3)

Tied after regulation and the overtime periods, West Davidson won on kicks in a shootout.

PG: Goal by Patience Keller. Sarah Majors had 6 saves.

#6 Wheatmore 9, #11 Mount Pleasant 0

WHS: Ellie Garrison scored five goals and Natalie Bowman added three with one goal by Kynnedi Routh.

Goal keeper Lucy Lockwood had 4 saves and tied the Wheatmore record with her 24th career shutout.

Liberty Post 81 12, Wilkes County 2

The season opener between two teams restarting their baseball programs was one-sided with Post 81 - which missed the 2023 season - winning in five innings over Wilkesboro Post 31 which had not fielded a senior team for more than a decade.

Liberty scored in each inning capped by six runs in the top of the fifth for the 10 run advantage. Jacob Flinchum produced a 2-rbi single in the third inning, Bauer Bowlings an rbi double in the fourth and Carson Williams cleared the bases with a 3-rbi hit in the sixth inning to lead 7 players with hits.

Starter Chance Holdaway pitched two innings giving up 2 earned runs on 1 hit and 2 walks with 4 strikouts. Brody Engle followed and got the win with 1 hit, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts in two innings of work. Cade McCallum struck out the 3 batters he faced in the fifth.


May 15, 2024 – Wednesday Results

BASEBALL – PLAYOFFS (Round 3)

#3 Morehead 1, #6 Randleman 0

The Tigers could only manage 2 hits - singles by John Kirkpatrick and Braxton Walker - as both starting pitchers, Seth Way (RHS) and Anderson Nance (MHS), went the distance giving up a combined 6 hits, 5 walks and 24 strikeouts.

Way took the loss allowing 1 (earned) run on 4 hits and 2 walks with 11 strikeouts.
