Sportstone - 2020 Spring Sports

The 2020 spring sports season ended in North Carolina shortly after it began following the decision by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association to temporarily suspend all athletic activity as a new coronavirus began spreading a severe respiratory disease (CoVID-19) across the state.

The athletic 'shut down' went into effect on Saturday, March 14 and was originally scheduled to last through April 6. It was soon extended until May 18 before the decision was made in late April to cancel the remainder of the 2020 season completely.

Scheduled varsity athletic events missed in Randolph County due to the pandemic totaled 465, not including post-season contests:

Since one event can mean more than one team misses a contest - for example, the Randolph County Track & Field Meet was one event but seven teams lost opportunities to compete - the total contests missed when broken down by teams in Randolph County was much higher:

	LOCAL SPORTS TIMELINE - COVID-19 PANDEMIC
MON, MARCH 2	First playing date for high school spring sports.
TUE, MARCH 3	North Carolina's first coronavirus patient is identified.
THU, MARCH 12	Governor Roy Cooper asks that all events involving 100 or more people be postponed or cancelled. The NCHSAA announces a suspension of all athletic activities from March 14-April 6.
SAT, MARCH 14	Governor Cooper announces that public schools will be closed for two weeks.
FRI, MARCH 20	American Legion Baseball suspends athletic activities until further notice.
MON, MARCH 23	Governor Cooper announces that public schools will remain closed through May 15. He also encourages people to limit gatherings to no more than 50 people. The NCHSAA extends the athletic shut down through May 18. Some North Carolina municipalities begin issuing stay-at-home orders.
MON, MARCH 30	A statewide stay-at-home order goes into effect until April 29.
TUE, APRIL 7	American Legion Baseball cancels the 2020 national tournaments (Regionals and World Series).
MON, APRIL 13	North Carolina American Legion cancels all summer youth activities.
THU, APRIL 23	The North Carolina stay-at-home order is extended until May 8.
FRI, APRIL 24	The NCHSAA announces the cancellation of all remaining 2020 sports activities.
WED, APRIL 29	The NCHSAA announces the remaining eight basketball teams are State Co-Champions for 2020.
